Best time to visit Tarangire National Park
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Long dry season: herds concentrate on the Tarangire River and Silale Swamp, peak prices, September and October driest for elephants.
Short dry season: a balanced window, greener park, migrant birds still present and fewer vehicles than mid-year.
Short rains: the park greens, calving begins, birds arrive and mammals disperse, with prices below peak until late December.
Long rains: herds out on the steppe, tall grass, difficult tracks, some southern camps reduced, low-season park fee from 15 March to 15 May.

Elephant herds return to the Tarangire River, the destination's defining natural event.

Tarangire National Park travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- A day trip from Arusha shows the northern river circuit at midday, the park at its most crowded, not its best.
- Wet-season marketing uses dry-season herd photographs; from November to May the herds disperse outside the park.
- Burunge and Randilen lodges are outside the national park, which changes fees, dawn starts and permitted activities.
- Quotes that claim fees are included can hide entry per day, concession per night and activity fees worth over US$150 a day.
Getting around Tarangire National Park: public transport and more
- Arusha to the main gate is about 110 to 130 km and roughly two and a half hours on a paved road, driven in daylight.
- Kuro airstrip inside the park is about 20 to 25 minutes by air from Arusha Airport, with camp transfers on top.
- Inside the park your operator's 4x4 and driver-guide are the transport; there is no fuel in the park.
- Use the Sangaiwe gate for Burunge-side lodges rather than driving to the main gate.
