And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Mikumi
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Dry season and the safari season, when game concentrates on the Mkata Floodplain and trails in Udzungwa and the Ulugurus are driest.
Peak dry season with the most concentrated viewing and the hottest, dustiest conditions. October heat peaks at midday.
Short rains from November. The plain greens, migrant birds arrive, rates fall and malaria risk starts to climb.
Green season with lush grass, newborn antelope and the best birding, but dispersed game and muddy southern tracks.
Long rains. Roads are worst, mosquitoes and malaria risk peak, and some lodges close or reduce service.
Shoulder weeks in late May to early June and early November balance game, crowds and rates for flexible travellers.
What's on
- Palearctic migrant bird arrival November to April
Migrant birds boost Mikumi's 400 plus recorded species, making the green season the birding peak.
- Sanje Waterfall in full flow April to June
The Udzungwa fall runs strongest after the rains, when its trail is also at its most slippery and needs most care.

Think twice about
- The A7 highway at night
Heavy trucks, poor lighting and animals crossing without warning. Do every highway leg in daylight and never plan a first arrival after dark.
- Inside the park on foot without a ranger
Walking is only permitted on a guided safari with an armed TANAPA ranger. There is no self guided walking in Mikumi or Udzungwa.
- Morogoro as a daily commuting base for dawn drives
The gate is 1.5 to 2 hours away each way, so a daily commute spends the best floodplain hours on the highway. Sleep at the park for dawn.

- Mikumi is a malarial lowland park. Take prophylaxis as prescribed, use repellent, cover up at dusk and sleep under nets.
- Slow for animals on the highway even outside the park boundary, and keep to the reduced speed limit inside the park.
- Carry evacuation insurance. Serious hospital care means Dar es Salaam, hours away by road from the park.
Mikumi travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Operator pages quoting 1 hour from Morogoro station to the gate are optimistic. Plan on 1.5 to 2 hours.
- A cheap Mikumi quote that does not itemise park fees, concession fees, VAT and vehicle costs is leaving the expensive parts out.
- The announced Kilosa SGR gate is a project to verify for your dates, not an open gate to plan around today.
Getting around Mikumi: public transport and more
- Take the SGR from Dar es Salaam to Morogoro in about 1 hour 40 minutes, then a pre arranged vehicle for 1.5 to 2 hours to the gate.
- The A7 highway is tarmac from Dar es Salaam to the gate, about 283 km and 4.5 to 5 hours by road in normal conditions.
- Udzungwa's Mang'ula gate is about 1.5 hours south of Mikumi by road, and Morogoro town is about 90 km back toward the coast.
