Things to do in Iringa
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Iringa
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Long dry season and the best Ruaha game viewing, peaking August to October as water shrinks to the river.
Coldest months in Iringa town, with nights toward single figures Celsius: bring a proper warm layer.
Short rains: Ruaha greens up, birds arrive, visitors thin and town sights stay workable between showers.
Hotter, drier break between rains, green landscapes and good birding, with game more dispersed in Ruaha.
Main rains: Ruaha roads can be slow or impassable, some camps close, and malaria risk rises.

Is Iringa safe?
- Violent crime is common countrywide and demonstrations can be unpredictable: take care in tourist places and do not walk alone at night.
- Only the area within 20 km of the Mozambique border is an essential travel only strip. Iringa and Ruaha are far from it.
- Malaria is present below 1,800 m, including Ruaha: take prescribed prophylaxis and treat any fever urgently.
- Emergency number in Tanzania is 112, and serious medical cases from Iringa go to Dar es Salaam.
Iringa travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Day tripping Ruaha from Iringa spends the best game hours on the road: sleep inside the park instead.
- Do not attempt the Ruaha park road in a town saloon car, and do not drive intercity roads after dark.
- Do not carry only cash for park fees: TANAPA payment is by card in US dollars, and Ruaha has no ATMs.
Getting around Iringa: public transport and more
- Iringa is about 500 km by road from Dar es Salaam via Morogoro, a bus day of eight to ten hours.
- Ruaha's Msembe gate is about 110 to 130 km from Iringa, two to three hours by 4x4 over tarmac then dirt.
- Isimila, Kalenga and Igeleke all need hired transport: agree fare and waiting time before setting off.
