Things to do in Mbeya
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Mbeya
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Wet season and Kitulo flower season, peaking around February and March. Roads to the plateau can be muddy.
Dry season, best for Mbeya Peak, Loleza and Ngozi hiking and for reliable road travel. Cold nights at altitude, frost possible on Kitulo.
Short rains begin, the plateau greens up and the first orchids appear, with travel still mostly workable.
What's on
- Kitulo flower peak February to March
Peak orchid, lily and red-hot poker bloom on the Kitulo plateau in the wet season.
Best things to do in Mbeya
Mbeya Central Market
The working heart of town for highland produce, coffee, bananas and everyday Mbeya life, best browsed in the morning.
Lunji Coffee Farm
A working coffee farm on the Mbeya Range slopes where tours link the bean, the roast and the descent from Mbeya Peak.
TAZARA Mbeya Station
The highland stop on the Dar es Salaam to Kapiri Mposhi line, worth riding for scenery even if you only ride one leg.
Where to stay in Mbeya
Utengule, west of Mbeya
splurge, coffee country and Rift Valley views
Home to Utengule Coffee Lodge, quiet and scenic, but you need transport into town.
Central Mbeya and Forest area
transit nights, business and early starts
Handy for the market, cafes, bus stations and TAZARA, with the mid-range town hotels.
Mbalizi Road and Isyesye
budget and homestay stays
Lower prices and a local feel, a short ride from the centre rather than a walk.
Think twice about
- Tunduma border post at peak hours
Hectic, crowded and built for freight and buses, not for lingering. Cross with documents ready and valuables out of sight.
- Unlit streets away from central Mbeya at night
Use a vetted taxi or hotel-arranged car after dark instead of walking, and keep phones and bags discreet.

Is Mbeya safe?
- Keep valuables out of sight in markets and bus stations, and use hotel arranged or vetted taxis after dark.
- Malaria risk does not disappear at Mbeya altitude, and it is high at Lake Nyasa. Take travel-clinic advice and bite prevention seriously.
- Avoid demonstrations and large gatherings, keep a low profile, and do not drive rural roads after dark.
Mbeya travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Do not treat Mbeya as a safari town with walk-in luxury. The splurge tier is one coffee lodge, not a row of resorts.
- Do not attempt Kitulo in a saloon car in heavy rain. The plateau roads turn muddy and a 4WD is strongly advised.
- At Ngozi, agree the entry and guide fee at the gate before you start, and keep the boda driver's phone number for the return.
Getting around Mbeya: public transport and more
- Daladala minibuses are cheap in town, boda-boda motorbikes are everywhere, and a private car with driver is the sane way to do Kitulo, Ngozi and Matema.
- Songwe Airport serves Mbeya with domestic flights, and long buses link Mbeya to Dar es Salaam, Iringa and the Tunduma border.
- The TAZARA Mukuba train resumed in February 2026 at one departure a week each way, Friday from Dar es Salaam and Tuesday from Kapiri Mposhi, and delays are normal.
