Things to do in Kigoma & Lake Tanganyika
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Kigoma & Lake Tanganyika
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Dry season and best time: easier trails, chimps lower and nearer shore, boats and roads most reliable.
Short rains and shoulder: lush forest, good birding, full waterfalls, fewer visitors, slippery trails.
Long rains, April wettest: muddy trails, road and boat disruption, some Mahale camps closed.

Think twice about
- Burundi border area north of Kigoma
Do not travel there without checking current local conditions that week, and do not cross informally. Border transport can be limited by fuel shortages.
- Informal lake crossings to Congo or Burundi
Eastern Congo and Burundi carry armed group risk. Use no unofficial boat crossing, at any price.
- Unlit lakeshore roads after dark
Walk Kigoma by day and take a taxi or boda boda at night. Lakeshore roads beyond town are unlit and isolated.

- There is no luxury hotel and no fine dining tier in Kigoma town itself.
