Things to do in Kilimanjaro
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Kilimanjaro
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Dry and clear; a top climbing window, slightly quieter than mid-year.
Driest months and busiest season; book climbs well ahead.
Long rains: wet trails and low visibility; Rongai is the least-bad option.
Short rains; less predictable, Rongai stays driest.
Shoulder month that can be excellent; Kilimanjaro Marathon season nearby in Moshi.

Where to stay in Kilimanjaro

Arusha outskirts
garden-lodge calm
Leafy lodges between Arusha and the airport, 20-30 minutes from town; taxi-dependent.
Think twice about
- The Moshi-Arusha highway strip
A noisy truck road with nothing to walk to; you will taxi everywhere anyway, so base in a town.
- Arusha as a trek base for Marangu or Machame starts
The 90-120 minute gate transfer is fine once but wears thin across a climb; Moshi is the trek base.
- Marangu village (unless climbing the Marangu route)
Small and pleasant but thin on services and off the main road, with no reason to be there otherwise.
- Budget blocks by Arusha's central bus stand
Cheap but noisy through the night, and the one part of town where late walks feel uncomfortable.

Is Kilimanjaro safe?
- Petty theft concentrates around Arusha's bus stand and markets and Moshi's station road after dark; use hotel safes and avoid late solo walks there. On the mountain the risks are altitude and weather: your guide's turnaround call is final. Emergency number 112.
Kilimanjaro travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Packages near US$1,200 cannot cover US$1,000 in park fees plus fair wages; check KPAP membership and expect US$1,500 plus.
- The 5-day Marangu saves about US$250 and buys the lowest summit success rate; take the 6-day version.
- Chemka water is warm (30-35 C), not hot; it is a swim, not a spa.
- Agree any guiding price up front with Arusha street touts or just keep walking.
Getting around Kilimanjaro: public transport and more
- Moshi town centre is walkable; taxis are cheap, agree the fare before getting in.
- Moshi to Arusha is about 90 minutes on the A23 by shuttle or private taxi.
- Trek operators handle all gate transfers; confirm pickup times at the pre-climb briefing.
- Arrange JRO airport transfers through your hotel or operator; walk past the arrivals touts to your named driver.
