Things to do in Nyerere National Park
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Nyerere National Park
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Dry season and the safari season, with game concentrated at the river and lakes, best walking and most predictable wild dogs.
The hottest month, harsh by midday, but often dramatic at the water as levels fall.
Green and short-rain months with top birding, newborns, lower rates, thick bush, dispersed game and high malaria risk.
Long rains from about mid-March to mid-May. Most camps close, the Rufiji floods and strips and tracks can become unusable.
What's on
- Wild dog denning season June to August denning
Packs den in the early dry season, which can make a known pack more predictable for guides, with no sighting guaranteed.
- Carmine bee-eater and migratory bird season November to March
Migrants and carmine bee-eaters peak on the Rufiji and lakes in the green months, best seen by boat.
Best things to do in Nyerere National Park
Rufiji River
The signature boat safari river, drifting past hippo pods, crocodiles and rich birdlife at sunset.
Lake Manze
The workhorse lake of the central game drive circuit, most reliable for general game in the dry season.
Lake Nzerakera
A core central lake by Roho ya Selous, paired with Manze in the area guides call the best for game.
Lake Siwandu
The quieter eastern lake, worked by boat, vehicle and on foot from the Impala and Siwandu side.
Lake Tagalala
A hill-set western lake known for large crocodiles and hippos, reached naturally from Beho Beho.
Stiegler's Gorge
The famous Rufiji gorge, now the hydropower dam site, so any visit depends on current park arrangements.
Where to stay in Nyerere National Park
Central photographic zone, Lake Manze and Lake Nzerakera
best general game viewing and luxury lake camps
The Manze and Nzerakera circuit is the game heart of the park, with Roho ya Selous, Siwandu and Lake Manze Camp.
Rufiji River, northern zone
boat safaris, fishing and fly camping
The river camps put the Rufiji at the centre of the stay, with boats, walks and fly camps from the camp.
Western hills, Beho Beho side
walking, hills and Lake Tagalala
Beho Beho's hills, walking country, Tagalala and the hot springs area feel distinct from the central lakes.
Mloka and Mtemere Gate, outside the park
budget stays and road access
Gateway lodges outside the boundary avoid in-park concession nights and run shared safaris in by the day.
Think twice about
- South of the Rufiji River hunting blocks as a visitor area
The southern blocks are privately leased hunting concessions, off-limits to photographic visitors. The park experience is the northern photographic zone.
- Mloka to Mtemere road at night and in heavy rain
The final gravel stretch is rough, slow and can be impassable in heavy rain. Arrive in daylight in a proper 4x4.
- Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar as a daily safari base
Flights are short but transfers, strip timings and park hours make a daily commute a poor substitute for sleeping at the park.

Is Nyerere National Park safe?
- Nyerere is a high-risk malaria area year round. Take prophylaxis as advised, prevent bites, and treat any later fever as malaria until ruled out.
- Never swim, wade or fish from the bank. Hippos and crocodiles set the rules on every boat trip, walk and riverbank, and walks always run with a guide and an armed ranger.
- Carry evacuation insurance. Care in the park is first aid only, and serious cases fly to Dar es Salaam.
Nyerere National Park travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- A cheap in-park headline rate usually excludes the TANAPA fee layer, private activities or transfers until the quote proves otherwise.
- Older fee tables showing US$70 are the pre-VAT tariff, not a discount, and older itineraries predate the hydropower dam at Stiegler's Gorge.
- There is no restaurant scene inside the park or at Mloka to fall back on, so the camp kitchen is your food plan.
Getting around Nyerere National Park: public transport and more
- Fly in on light aircraft in about 45 minutes to an hour from Dar es Salaam to Mtemere, Matambwe, Siwandu or Kiba airstrips, in a soft bag within about 15 to 20 kg.
- By road, Dar es Salaam to Mloka and Mtemere Gate is roughly 230 km and 5 to 6 hours in a 4x4, with the last 70 to 75 km on rough gravel.
- Inside the park, distances are long and slow, so one zone per stay works better than crossing the park daily.
