Things to do in Yala
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Yala
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Peak dry season, best leopard and bear viewing at shrinking waterholes, very hot by midday, highest prices.
Dry and windy with good safaris, and Kataragama Esala fills the pilgrimage town for about two weeks.
Drought closure season. Block 1 typically closes September to mid October, and in 2026 Blocks 1 and 2 closed to 15 October.
Maha rains, green bush and harder spotting, with the best Bundala birding as migrants arrive from October to March.
What's on
- Kataragama Esala Perahera July to August
About two weeks of processions, fire walking and kavadi dance that fill Kataragama with pilgrims.
- Greater flamingo season at Bundala October to March
Flamingos and migrant shorebirds peak on the Bundala lagoons through the northern winter.
Best things to do in Yala
Yala National Park Block 1
The classic leopard safari, dense leopards, elephants and lagoons, with jeep crowding at sightings as the trade off.
Ruhunu Maha Kataragama Dewalaya
A multi faith pilgrimage shrine by Kiri Vehera, at its most intense at evening puja with drumming and offerings.
Sithulpawwa Rajamaha Viharaya
A 2nd century BC rock monastery in the forest, with cave temples and a wide view over jungle from the rock top.
Tissamaharama Raja Maha Vihara
The great white dagoba of old Tissa by the lake, a living temple that anchors a dawn or dusk visit to town.
Kirinda Vihara Maha Devi Temple
A rock temple above Kirinda marking the Viharamahadevi landing, with the best coastal view in the Yala area.
Tissa Wewa
An ancient tank whose bund is Tissa's dawn and dusk promenade, with fishermen, egrets and fruit bats at sunset.
Where to stay in Yala
Tissamaharama
practical base, food, jeeps and Bundala access
Most choice at every price, the town restaurants, and routine jeep booking for Palatupana and Bundala.
Palatupana park edge
dawn gate access and luxury lodges
Closest to the Block 1 gate and the coast, furthest from town food, with all the tented camps and big lodges.
Kataragama and Katagamuwa side
Block 5, Sithulpawwa and the temple
A pilgrimage town base with a quieter gate, simple hotels and an evening puja, reached through Kataragama.
Think twice about
- Yala National Park interior on foot
Walking in the park is not permitted and is dangerous. Leopards, elephants and buffalo use the same tracks. Stay in the jeep.
- Kirinda Beach for swimming
Rough surf, strong currents and deep water with no lifeguarded swimming. Walk the shore and stay out of the sea.
- Kataragama sacred precinct as a party base
A working pilgrimage precinct with modest dress, early nights and no public drinking. Sleep in Tissa if you need a bar.
Best restaurants in Yala

A family run traveller favourite for fish curry and vegetable curry spreads, plus Chinese and Italian dishes.
Chef Lady Restaurant
The step up in town, grilled prawns, seafood and curries on a long menu in a garden setting for groups.

A long running Tissa seafood place for crab, prawns and lagoon fish, with mixed recent reports on consistency.
Outdoor things to do in Yala
Yala National Park Block 5
The quieter Weheragala safari via Galge, fewer jeeps and calmer sightings, with less predictable leopards.
Bundala National Park
A Ramsar lagoon park for flamingos, storks and migrant shorebirds, calmer and less crowded than a Yala drive.
Kulu Safaris
A small naturalist led tented camp and safari operation entering away from the Palatupana crowds.
Leopard Trails
A ranger led tented camp by the quieter Katagamuwa gate, where the guiding is the product, not just the tent.
Kirinda Beach
A long wild shore below the temple rock for walking and sunset, with rough sea that rules out swimming.

Is Yala safe?
- Unrest, terrorism and landmines are the national risks: protests can happen at any time and terrorist attacks cannot be ruled out in places visited by foreign nationals.
- Stay in the jeep in Yala, never walk park or Kataragama roads after dark where elephants move, and use repellent against dengue mosquitoes by day.
Yala travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Expecting a restaurant scene or nightlife. Eating is lodge dining or a handful of cheap town restaurants, and days start before dawn.
- Building a trip around swimming at Kirinda. The shore is for walking and views, not for entering the water.
Getting around Yala: public transport and more
- Base in Tissamaharama for Palatupana and Bundala, or on the Kataragama side for Galge and Block 5, and let your stay book the jeep.
- Confirm in writing whether a safari price includes foreign park entry, vehicle fee, tracker and taxes, not just jeep hire.
