Things to do in Ella
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Ella
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best and peak: clearest and driest, sunrise hikes and excursions most reliable, also most crowded and expensive.
Good shoulder month, broadly dry; Sinhala and Tamil New Year brings guesthouse food and games but jammed transport.
Wettest, lushest and cheapest: southwest monsoon, slippery trails and leeches, waterfalls at full power, mornings often usable.
Second peak with drier spells and festivals; European holidays fill Ella, so book as peak.
Green, quiet and unpredictable; September can be a sweet spot, October builds to heavier thunderstorms.
Wet, quiet and a bargain: among Ella's rainiest months, with muddy trails and intermittent views.
What's on
- Sinhala and Tamil New Year 13-14 April
Home food, games and rituals; guesthouse stays shine, but trains and buses jam as Sri Lankans travel home.
- Vesak May, full moon
Lanterns and free dansala food stalls island wide, atmospheric in Ella.
- Kandy Esala Perahera July/August
Sri Lanka's most iconic procession, in Kandy not Ella; combine Kandy and Ella as one hill country block.
- Kataragama Festival July/August
Multi faith pilgrimage with fire walking in the southeast; combinable with a Yala or south coast extension.
- Deepavali October/November
Festival of lights, most vivid in the Tamil tea estate communities around Haputale and Bandarawela.
Best things to do in Ella
Little Adam's Peak
The essential first hike: steps and tea tracks to a ridge looking through Ella Gap and across to Ella Rock.
Nine Arch Bridge
A colonial nine arch viaduct in jungle and tea, best seen as a slow blue train edges across it.
Ella Rock
The bigger half day hike: railway track, tea and forest to a broad summit straight down the Gap.
Badulla Line Hill Country Train
Riding this line is a sight in itself, climbing past ridge stations and crossing Nine Arch Bridge.
Uva Halpewatte Tea Factory
A working Uva tea factory tour with tasting, or a longer masterclass plucking and making your own tea.
Lanka's Cooking Class
A small home based class cooking five to seven clay pot Sri Lankan dishes, then eating what you made.
Ravana Falls and Ravana Cave
A wide roadside waterfall that becomes a half morning out when paired with the steep climb to Ravana Cave.
Demodara Loop and Dhowa Rock Temple
Quieter second day sights: a railway loop that spirals under itself and an ancient cave temple near Bandarawela.
Where to stay in Ella
Passara Road
best overall base, first trip
Above the bar noise with Gap and tea views, a short walk or tuk tuk from restaurants and the Little Adam's trail.
Ella town centre and main strip
budget, trains, nightlife
Walk to dinner, the station and tour pickups, with the deepest budget supply, but music and buses run late and early.
Estates and hills outside town
quiet, views, honeymoons
Boutique hotels and eco lodges two to six kilometres out: silence and sunrise over the Gap, with dinners mostly at the hotel.
Think twice about
- Directly over a main strip bar or the bus turning area
Not unsafe, but music, tuk tuks and early buses over Passara Road will cost a light sleeper every night.
- Isolated listings actually in Wellawaya, Badulla or Bandarawela sold as Ella
A cheap room 15 to 25km away costs the saving in tuk tuks and loses the dawn hikes that make Ella worth visiting.
- Ravana Falls roadside strip on the Wellawaya highway
A busy main road with waterfall stalls and bus parking, no evening life and no advantage over staying in Ella.
Best restaurants in Ella
Matey Hut
A tiny hut serving rice and curry sets, coconut roti and juices, and the consensus best food in Ella.
Ella's Kitchen
A local rice and curry house singled out for a full lunch at local prices with a mountain view terrace.
Café Chill
Ella's landmark traveller restaurant bar, an all day living room where hiking groups form over dinner.
AK Ristoro
A small Italian led restaurant serving handmade style pasta at a calmer pace than the strip; go at opening.
The Barn by Starbeans
Wood fired style pizzas, burgers and cocktails in a barn themed space, the reliable group pleaser on the strip.
Ravana Pool Club
The pool club's international restaurant, where a special occasion dinner is really about the terrace at sunset.
98 Acres Resort & Spa
The 98 Acres restaurant does Sri Lankan tasting dinners and breakfasts on a tea estate terrace above the Gap.
Ceylon Tea Factory Restaurant
A smarter candle lit Passara Road space with prawn curry, pasta, salads and flavoured iced teas.
Best coffee in Ella
Dream Café
A café restaurant with good espresso, Western breakfasts, strong wifi and a work friendly daytime atmosphere.
Art Café Umbrella
A colourful quiet café on Passara Road for soups, juices and breakfast on the way back from a dawn hike.
Outdoor things to do in Ella
Nuwara Eliya Golf Club
Sri Lanka's high country golf since 1889, at about 1830 metres, best done as an overnight en route.
Victoria Golf Resort
A Donald Steel course ranked Sri Lanka's best, but five hours each way, so play it from a Kandy base.
Ella Rock and Little Adam's Peak Combined Hike
Both big hikes in one dawn to midday push for fit walkers who start at 5.30am; most people split them.
Idalgashinna to Ohiya Ridge Walk
Station to station ridge walks by train with huge views on both sides, less signed than Ella's own trails.
Namunukula and Passara Road Viewpoints
A half day tuk tuk loop east toward Passara and Namunukula, through tea country with far fewer visitors.
Flying Ravana Adventure Park
Sri Lanka's first mega zipline over tea through the Gap, plus ATV, abseiling, archery and a mega jump.
Diyaluma Falls
Sri Lanka's second highest falls, hiked guided to natural rock pools on the cliff top above the valley.
Lipton's Seat
The viewpoint where Lipton surveyed his tea empire, reached through Dambatenne estate before cloud closes it.
Best hotels in Ella
Uga Ghiri
Ella's new ultra luxury benchmark, opened 2026 on a century old tea estate with large villas and full service.
98 Acres Resort & Spa
An eco resort on a working tea estate below Little Adam's, with trailhead access to the ridge at dawn.
Nine Skies by Teardrop Hotels
A restored tea planter's bungalow above Demodara station: five suites, gardens, pool and country house calm.
EKHO Ella
A boutique hotel above the town centre with Gap views, close enough to walk to dinner but above the noise.
Zion View
A long running mid range favourite with Gap view rooms and a terrace, central but not on the bar strip.
Mountain Heavens
A family run Passara Road hotel selling a clean room, a balcony pointed at the Gap and a good Sri Lankan breakfast.
Rowinrich Cottages
Cottage and garden stays a short walk from the centre, suiting longer stays with a kitchenette and laundry help.
Newburgh Ella
A character stay in a converted old tea factory building, for travellers who prefer tea heritage to a resort pool.

Is Ella safe?
- Never lean or hang out of open train doors for photos; travellers are hurt and killed doing this in Sri Lanka most years.
- Do not swim at waterfalls in or after heavy rain and never climb wet rock; obey local signs on the day.
- Hike at dawn, be off summits by early afternoon in wet months, and turn back in thunder.
- Carry a torch on unlit lanes at night, watch footing and traffic, and keep food zipped away from monkeys at Ravana Falls.
- Full hospitals are in Bandarawela and Badulla; carry prescription medicines and backup cash withdrawn in Kandy or Colombo.
Ella travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Ella Rock junction misdirection: walkers are misdirected then rescued for a fee; follow an offline GPS track or a hotel guide.
- Decline driver proposed spice garden and gem shop detours; they are commission sales funnels, not free sights.
- Ravana Falls at midday is a 20 minute stop, not a half day tour at half day prices.
- Avoid empty main strip all cuisine restaurants with touts and photo menus; a queue at a tiny place is the quality signal.
- Paid swings and photo nests near Little Adam's charge for a photo metres from the same free views.
Getting around Ella: public transport and more
- Ella centre, the station, restaurants and the Nine Arch and Little Adam's trailheads are all walkable.
- Use tuk tuks for Ravana Falls, Halpewatte and trailheads; agree the total, waiting and return price before you get in.
- Ask your hotel the fair tuk tuk price before going out, carry small notes, and use PickMe where available as a benchmark.
- Check Sri Lanka Railways before planning a direct Kandy to Ella train; the Kandy end was under repair in 2026.
