Things to do in Dambulla
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Dambulla
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Sweet spot after the Maha rains: full tanks, green forest, warm days and comfortable sightseeing, at peak prices.
Hot build up with afternoon intermonsoon storms. Sinhala and Tamil New Year on 13 to 14 April closes small businesses and packs transport.
Main dry season begins while the south coast is wet. Vesak in May and Poson in June fill the cave temple and Mihintale with pilgrims.
Prime dry season: clearest Sigiriya views and the peak elephant Gathering in Minneriya and Kaudulla, with Esala Perahera in Kandy in late July to August.
Second intermonsoon then Maha rains: muddy safari tracks, dispersed herds, slippery climbs, but green scenery and low prices.
Maha rains easing late in the month, lush and full tanks, with peak festive prices from about 20 December despite unsettled weather.

Think twice about
- Dambulla town centre highway strip
Loud truck traffic, night market lorries, few pavements and no evening life. Sleep by the lake, in Inamaluwa or in Sigiriya village instead, and use the town for buses, the market and cheap food.
- Rural roads around Habarana and Sigiriya after dark
Wild elephants cross at dusk and after dark and lighting is poor. Do not walk or ride a scooter on these roads at night.
