Is Jaffna safe?
- Photographing military installations, checkpoints and personnel is prohibited.
- Stay on main roads and paths in rural areas and heed landmine and unexploded ordnance warning signs.
- Stay on well-used roads in the north and do not travel off them in rural areas because of unexploded ordnance; there is a visible military presence in the north and ongoing mine clearance near Elephant Pass.
- Alcohol is limited to a few hotel bars and licensed shops; never drink in public or near temples.
Jaffna travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Do not schedule a Delft day trip on a tight departure day; the last return boats are in the early afternoon.
- Casuarina Beach facilities are basic and its changing rooms are poorly kept; go for the sea, not the amenities.
- There is no international luxury hotel tier in Jaffna; the top local properties are the ceiling.
Getting around Jaffna: public transport and more
- Tuk-tuks for everything in town, agreeing the fare first.
- The intercity train from Colombo Fort takes about 6 to 8 hours; book a reserved seat ahead.
- Ferries for Delft and Nainativu leave from Kurikadduwan Jetty, about 45 minutes to an hour by road across the causeways.
- Karainagar and Casuarina Beach are reached by causeway road, no ferry needed.
