Things to do in Mirissa
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Mirissa
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Peak, calm clear sea, whales, surf, snorkel and dive all open, highest prices and fullest hotels.
Shoulder, hottest month, sea holds early and whale season tails off, good value after New Year.
South west monsoon, rough sea with no whale boats or diving, quiet and cheap with prices down 30 to 50 percent.
Inter monsoon, wettest in October then calming through November, late November is the best value pick.
Every month has a Poya full moon day, a public holiday when alcohol sales are dry by law in most venues.

Think twice about
- Directly on the Matara Road (A2)
Busy highway with buses, trucks and horns, traffic noise, fumes and a dangerous road crossing to the sand.
- Beachfront centre directly over the main beach bars
Peak season parties rotate through central venues and bass carries, miserable to sleep over before midnight.
- The harbour / far western end beyond the fisheries harbour
Working harbour with fish processing smells, boat traffic in the swimming water and no real beach scene.
- Isolated inland properties with nothing in walking distance
Every meal and beach trip becomes a negotiated tuk tuk in the dark unless you have a meal plan or driver.

- Only cross to Parrot Rock at low to mid tide with grip footwear, the channel deepens as the tide rises.
- Take seasickness tablets before whale and fishing boats, and clean reef cuts and urchin wounds the same day.
- Use repellent at dawn and dusk for dengue, and seek same day care for any dog or monkey bite or scratch.
Mirissa travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Avoid the cheapest harbour whale boats, they chase and crowd whales and give the worst experience.
- Agree species, weight and total cooked price including tax and service before seafood leaves the ice.
- Photograph rental surfboards on both sides at hire and agree the ding repair scale in advance.
- Refuse tuk tuk commission stops at tea factories, spice gardens and gem shops on cheap tours.
Getting around Mirissa: public transport and more
- Use PickMe for tuk tuks to end fare negotiation, and agree the total for the vehicle before street hailing.
- Coastal buses are cheap and frequent in daylight for Weligama, Matara and Galle, use tuk tuks at night.
- Mirissa station is inland, budget a tuk tuk to the beach, and the Colombo train takes about 3 to 3.5 hours.
- Rent a scooter only with an IDP plus Sri Lankan permit, a real helmet and experience.
