Where to stay in Sigiriya
Sigiriya village
first trip, all-round base
Sleep in the rock's shadow, walk to the gates for dawn, and eat in family restaurants on the village strip.
Habarana
safaris, Polonnaruwa and train users
A junction base for Sigiriya, Dambulla, Polonnaruwa and the safari gates, with Habarana station for trains.
Dambulla and Kandalama lake area
luxury resort stay and southbound itinerary
Lakeside resorts that are destinations themselves, handy for the caves and leaving toward Kandy.
Think twice about
- Dambulla town centre and the A6 highway strip
A working wholesale market and transport town with truck noise, patchy pavements and persistent touting. Visit the caves and sleep elsewhere.
- Isolated jungle properties with no transport plan
A cabana down an unlit track is miserable without confirmed gate and dinner transfers. Arrive before dark and confirm costs in writing.
- Right on the Habarana junction A6 A11 intersection
Rooms fronting the junction get truck noise from 5am and dust all day for a trivial saving over lodges set back in grounds.

Is Sigiriya safe?
- The realistic risks are road, heat, animals and money. Climb at dawn or late afternoon with water and a hat.
- Never walk unlit lanes after dark because wild elephants move near tanks at night. Take the hotel car or tuk.
- Cover shoulders and knees at temples, remove shoes where required, and never pose with your back to a Buddha.
- No alcohol is sold on Poya full moon days. Emergency numbers are 119 for police and 110 for fire and ambulance.
Sigiriya travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Say no spice garden, no gem shop to your driver on day one, and never buy gems in the Triangle.
- Decline unofficial guides at gates and Dambulla steps who narrate unasked then demand a fee.
- Fix tuk fares before moving or use PickMe or a hotel called driver, as tourist area overcharging is documented.
- Avoid climbing Sigiriya at noon on a stacked day tour with Dambulla and a spice garden.
Getting around Sigiriya: public transport and more
- Hire a car with driver for the whole leg and agree price, mileage, driver lodging and parking before starting.
- Use tuks for village hops with the fare agreed before moving, and buses between towns via the Dambulla hub.
- Trains serve Habarana for Colombo and Trincomalee. Book reserved seats early in your own name.
