- Cover up and remove shoes at temples and never pose with your back to a Buddha image.

- Fort and Pettah friendly man pitches lead to gem shops, spice shops or commission tuk tours. Walk on.
- Never buy gems without independent certification and treat driver proposed spice gardens as commission stops.
- Sigiriya, Yala and Ella day tours from Colombo mean most of the day in a car. Overnight them or skip.

- Use PickMe or Uber for cars and tuks to fix the price and log the driver.
- Airport is about 35km north near Negombo, 45 to 60 minutes by expressway, longer at rush hour.
