Things to do in Ziro Valley
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Ziro Valley
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Deep winter is cold, clear and quiet, with Murung rituals in January and winter birding at Siikhe Lake.
Spring is the culture sweet spot, with Myoko from about 20 March, warming days and dry Talley trails.
Monsoon brings heavy rain, landslide prone roads and slippery leechy trails, so build in buffer days.
Dree, the Apatani harvest festival, runs 4 to 7 July in the middle of the monsoon.
Late September brings the four day Ziro Festival of Music as the rains retreat and the paddy turns gold green.
Post monsoon autumn is the best all round window, with clear skies, harvest colour and the Talley trekking season open.
December is cold, clear and very quiet, with near freezing nights and almost no other visitors.

Ziro Valley travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Expecting luxury: Ziro has no true luxury hotel or fine dining, and its top tier is comfortable by valley standards only.
- Saving the craft centre for a Sunday: it keeps government hours, so go on a weekday morning.
- Visiting villages without a guide and photographing people, especially elders, without asking first.
- Trusting the bamboo grove style postcard version of the festival: the ground is a field and late September mud is normal.
Getting around Ziro Valley: public transport and more
- Ride the overnight train from Guwahati to Naharlagun, then take a shared Sumo or hired taxi for about 100 km of mountain road to Ziro.
- From Itanagar the drive is about 115 km and four to five hours, and the same road continues after flights into Holongi or Lilabari.
- Agree every taxi and guide price in advance, as there are no meters in the valley.
- Hire local guides for village walks and for any Talley Valley walking.
