Things to do in Aligarh
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Aligarh
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best months: peak birding at Shekha Jheel and Keoladeo, walkable campus days, the Numaish in January to February and Mahashivratri in February or March.
Good shoulder: Sir Syed Day on 17 October and the start of birding in October, the AMU Literary Festival in early March.
Worst months: May and June highs in the 40s, then monsoon humidity, waterlogged old city lanes and a depleted Shekha Jheel in July and August.
Hot and transitional: manageable only with dawn starts and indoor middays.

Transient, noisy and served by the weakest reviewed lodges, on the wrong side of town from AMU and Civil Lines. Use it for trains, not for sleeping.

- Do not repeat any precise Upper Kot gold weight as fact, as circulating figures vary and none is authoritatively sourced.
- Do not merge the AMU Jama Masjid and the Upper Kot Jama Masjid, which are two mosques about 150 years apart.
- Delivery app fame is not restaurant quality in Aligarh.
Getting around Aligarh: public transport and more
- Take the train from New Delhi where possible, roughly one and a half to two hours to Aligarh Junction.
- Use e rickshaws and autos for short hops and agree the fare before moving.
- Hire a car with driver through your hotel for Shekha Jheel, Mangalayatan, Khereshwar and all day trips.
- Walk inside the AMU campus, where distances are larger than they look on a map.
