Things to do in Badami
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Badami
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best season: pleasant and dry, roughly 15 to 30 degrees C, and the rock climbing season.
Brutal heat above 40 degrees C on exposed rock with scarce shade, so sightsee only at opening and late afternoon.
Monsoon: greener country and a fuller lake, but humidity, slippery rock steps and rain disrupted road days.
What's on
- Chalukya Utsava January, three days, exact dates vary by year
State run dance festival, also billed as the Pattadakal Dance Festival, performed in front of the Pattadakal temples.

Resort style stays north of the centre, quieter at night, with a drive or auto needed for town dinners.
Think twice about
- Aihole village
A day excursion, not a base: no hotel strip, very limited food and nothing to do after dark. Sleep in Badami.
- Pattadakal village
A day excursion, not a base: only stalls at the UNESCO gate and a few basic homestays. Sleep in Badami.

Is Badami safe?
- Crime is a background risk nationally and Karnataka is far from India restricted border and conflict zones, but heat above 40 degrees C is the main hazard here.
- The caves have 150 to 200 steep rock steps without consistent railings, and monkeys snatch food and shiny objects, so carry nothing visible.
- Satellite phones and GPS devices are illegal in India without a licence, and the emergency number is 112.
Badami travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- ASI fees and hours published online conflict, so the monument counter on the day is the truth, and no VIP darshan product exists.
- At Pattadakal there are only tea and coconut stalls at the gate and Aihole has little more, so carry food and water.
- Both archaeological museums close on Fridays and keep shorter hours than the monuments.
Getting around Badami: public transport and more
- Badami station is about 5 km from the caves, with autos at the station, and Hubballi trains take roughly 2.5 to 3.5 hours.
- Hubballi airport is about 105 to 110 km away, roughly 2.5 to 3 hours by road, and Goa is a 5 to 6 hour drive, not a day trip.
- Walk the caves, museum, lake and Bhutanatha cluster, take autos for Banashankari, and hire a car for Pattadakal and Aihole.
- KSRTC buses run Badami to Pattadakal in about 45 minutes, cheaply and less predictably than a hired car.
