Things to do in Amritsar
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Amritsar
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best window, late October to early March: cool, dry and walkable, with winter birding and sarson saag. Fog can delay December and January departures.
Shoulder in March and early April: warming fast, workable with dawn weighted days.
Worst months: temperatures routinely exceed 40C, midday sightseeing is hazardous and the Wagah stands are a furnace.
Monsoon: hot, humid and wet, lanes waterlog and winter birds are gone, but prices are lowest and tourists fewest.
What's on
- Bandi Chhor Divas 8 November
Coincides with Diwali: the Golden Temple is illuminated with thousands of lights and fireworks over the sarovar.
- Guru Nanak Gurpurab 24 November
The founder birth anniversary: continuous scripture reading, nagar kirtan processions and maximum pilgrim volume.
- Lohri 13 January
Midwinter bonfire festival of sesame, jaggery and peanuts, a warm neighbourhood scale night.
- Baisakhi 13-14 April
Harvest festival and Sikh New Year, and the anniversary of Jallianwala Bagh, with processions and temple crowds.

Where to stay in Amritsar
Golden Temple, Heritage Street and old city edge
first trip, temple ceremonies
Within a 5 to 10 minute walk of the temple for dawn and night visits, with the bagh, museum and kulcha lanes on foot.
Ranjit Avenue
comfort, families and repeat visitors
A planned leafy district with better mid and upper range hotels, easier parking and quieter nights, a drive from the temple.
Mall Road, Basant Avenue and the Cantonment edge
luxury hotels
Greener spacious streets where the big brand luxury hotels cluster, with grounds, pools and spas, toured by private car.
Think twice about
- Immediate railway station strip
Tout heavy low quality budget hotels, station noise and arrival hassle, with no walkability gain.
- Deep inside the old city commercial lanes
Hall Bazaar interior and Katra Jaimal Singh depths have no car access to many doors, early commercial noise and festival crowds.
- Airport road and Raja Sansi far fringe
Properties 12 to 14km from the temple tax every day with commuting and cut off dawn and night temple visits, unless the resort is the point.

Is Amritsar safe?
- Amritsar feels safe by large Indian city standards, including at the temple at 4am. Watch for festival crowd pickpocketing at the temple and Wagah.
- Wear closed shoes in uneven old city lanes, drink bottled or filtered water, and treat summer heat and the October to November air quality dip as real risks.
Amritsar travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- The temple, langar, headscarves and shoe storage are free. Anyone charging an entry or compulsory guide fee at the gate is running a con.
- Fake SGPC sarai booking sites circulate. Book pilgrim rooms only via the official SGPC channel or a hotel desk in person.
- VIP Wagah passes sold in town are a scam. Reserved and foreigner seating is arranged at the venue with ID.
- Heritage Street shopping is priced for the temple crowd. Phulkari, juttis and kirpans are better value in Hall Bazaar and Katra Jaimal Singh.
Getting around Amritsar: public transport and more
- Walk the temple core. Use e-rickshaws on approach routes, autos for short hops with fare agreed first, and Ola or Uber cross town.
- Hire a car with driver by the day for Wagah, Harike and village days. The airport is about 11 to 13km and the station about 2km from the temple.
