Things to do in Bengaluru
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Bengaluru
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best months: post monsoon green, highs around 26 to 28C, clear skies for Nandi and Skandagiri, and the densest festival calendar.
Warm and manageable, highs 33 to 35C in March and April with pre monsoon showers from May. Sightsee early and retreat at noon.
Southwest monsoon: green and wet, highs 27 to 29C, traffic degrades on wet evenings and Skandagiri rocks are treacherous.
Festival quarter with a wet tail: the northeast monsoon can make October the wettest month, so do not assume it is dry.
What's on
- Lalbagh Flower Show (Republic Day) around 26 January
The twice yearly Glass House flower show, spectacular and almost unvisitably crowded.
- Bengaluru Karaga Eleven days in March or April, ending on the Chaitra full moon
An 11 day festival at Dharmaraya Swamy Temple ending in a midnight procession through the Pete.
- Ugadi March to April
Kannada New Year, bringing festive tiffin menus across the old city rooms.
- Lalbagh Flower Show (Independence Day) around 15 August
The Glass House flower show in monsoon season. Arrive at opening or skip it.
- Mysuru Dasara / Jamboo Savari Vijayadashami, in late September or October
Karnataka's biggest festival in Mysuru, with palace illumination and the Jamboo Savari procession from about 4:10pm.
- Deepavali October to November
Lights, emptier offices and firework noise across the city.
- Kadalekai Parishe 17 to 21 November (2025)
The groundnut fair at Basavanagudi's Bull Temple, with the bazaar turned carnival and over 500,000 visitors expected in 2025.
- Namma Pride late autumn
The city's established LGBTQ+ pride, in a scene centred on relaxed central cafes.
Best things to do in Bengaluru
Lalbagh Botanical Garden
The city's defining 240 acre garden, best at opening for the lake loop, Glass House and Lalbagh Rock before crowds build.
Cubbon Park
A 300 acre green in the civic centre, best as a Sunday morning circuit past Vidhana Soudha and the State Central Library.
Museum of Art & Photography
South India's first major private art museum, with 60,000 plus objects and calm, well sized exhibitions near Cubbon Park.
Tipu Sultan's Summer Palace
The heart of the guided old city walk, from KR Market flower chaos via Bangalore Fort to Tipu's teak summer palace.
Bull Temple
A 16th century temple with a huge monolithic Nandi, paired with Bugle Rock Park, Gandhi Bazaar and a tiffin breakfast.
Malleswaram
Old north Bengaluru at its most likeable, with tree lined avenues, Sankey Tank, Sampige Road markets and breakfast institutions.
Toit
The original Indiranagar brewpub, brewing since 2010, and the heart of a craft beer evening along 100 Feet Road.
Blossom Book House
Three floors of second hand books on Church Street, the city's best unstructured hour between sights.
Where to stay in Bengaluru
Central CBD (MG Road / Ashok Nagar / Lavelle Road / UB City / Residency Road)
first trip, all round base
Walkable by Bengaluru standards to Cubbon Park, MAP and Church Street, with metro access and the grand hotels.
Indiranagar
food, beer and evenings
100 Feet Road and 12th Main concentrate Toit, cafes and bars on the Purple Line, lively until about 1am.
Koramangala
younger travellers, groups and longer stays
The startup quarter, cafe dense with cheaper rooms and serviced apartments, but no metro yet, so central trips are cab rides.
Basavanagudi / Jayanagar / Malleswaram
a local, residential Bengaluru and second trips
Calm, tree lined and strong on breakfasts, with good value small hotels, but quiet evenings and cab rides to the brewpubs.
Airport corridor (Devanahalli / Hebbal)
a purpose only: golf, an early flight or a Nandi dawn start
The airport is 35 to 40 km and an hour plus from the centre, so an airport hotel is not a Bengaluru base.
Think twice about
- Whitefield, the Outer Ring Road (Bellandur to Marathahalli to KR Puram) and Electronic City / Sarjapur Road
IT campus districts built for commuters, soulless and marooned for a visitor, with 60 to 90 minute evening rides to Indiranagar.
- Majestic / Kempegowda Bus Station and the immediate station quarter
Chaotic around the clock with dense crowds, touts, broken pavements and the city's roughest street scene after dark. Pass through, do not sleep here.
- KR Market / Chickpet lanes as a base
Magnificent at 7am on a guided walk, but exhausting and noisy as a place to stay.

- Book Karavalli and Lupa for Friday and Saturday, Toit for weekend evenings, and good Ranga Shankara shows.
- Book Skandagiri permits, Bannerghatta safari slots at weekends, MAP special exhibitions at peak, and everything in Mysuru during Dasara.
- Central luxury hotels can cost more on weekdays than weekends, so check Saturday rates before booking.
Is Bengaluru safe?
- Ride hail after dark rather than walking unlit side streets, and keep to lit streets around Majestic at night.
- Watch footing for pavement gaps and open drains, and note street dogs are placid by day but territorial on quiet streets at night.
- Drink bottled or filtered water, ease into ghee and chilli gradually, and carry a layer for cool evenings at 900 metres.
Bengaluru travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Bangalore Palace at full price with no time buffer, Brigade Road and Commercial Street treated as sights, and Ulsoor Lake as a destination.
- Any city tour listing 10 stops, which in this traffic becomes a bus window tour.
- Grover Zampa's lunch: go for the wine and the setting, not the meal.
- Cross town pilgrimages for a single mid range meal, when good eating exists in every quarter.
Getting around Bengaluru: public transport and more
- Cluster one neighbourhood per half day and accept you will not pop across town twice in a day.
- Use Namma Metro where it exists: the Purple and Green lines cover most picks and are clean, cheap and traffic proof.
- Use Ola, Uber or Rapido instead of haggling with autos, and pay in app by card or UPI.
- Budget 1 to 1.5 hours off peak and 2 hours at peak for the airport, by cab or Vayu Vajra bus. There is no airport rail link yet.
- Do not self drive on a first visit. Hire a car with driver for excursion days to Nandi, Mysuru and Farmlore.
