Things to do in Bhopal
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Bhopal
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Cool, dry and comfortable, the main season for the lakes, Sanchi and Bhimbetka, with hotel prices at their peak.
The November Ijtima congregation brings very heavy demand for trains, flights and hotels across Bhopal.
Lokrang folk and tribal arts festival runs 26 to 30 January, the best week to pair with the Tribal Museum.
Extreme heat, with May highs at 44 degrees and above. Sightsee before 10:00 and take museums at midday.
Monsoon, peaking in August. Green lakes and hills, slippery paths at Bhimbetka and Sanchi, and lower hotel prices.
What's on
- Lokrang Festival 26 to 30 January
A five day folk and tribal arts festival organised by the Madhya Pradesh Adivasi Lok Kala Academy, starting on Republic Day.
- Aalmi Tablighi Ijtima November, long weekend, dates vary by year
One of the largest Muslim congregations in the world, held at Ghasipura outside Bhopal. Transport and hotels are under severe strain.

Very large pilgrim crowds at the Bhojeshwar Temple. Go on another day for the architecture, or deliberately for the festival.

Shaukat Mahal
An eccentric Begum era palace mixing Indo-Islamic, European and Gothic styles, best seen on an old city walk.
Where to stay in Bhopal
Shyamla Hills and the lake side
first trip, museums and the lake
Walkable to the Tribal Museum, Bharat Bhavan, Van Vihar and the lake promenade, and the quietest part of the city.
Arera Hills and DB City
business and onward travel
The newer mall and office district, closer to Rani Kamlapati station and the airport road.
Think twice about
- Old city and Hamidia Road by Bhopal Junction station
Visit for mosques, the Chowk and food, but congested lanes, late noise and mostly basic station lodges make it a poor base for sleeping.
- Far southern and eastern suburbs along the bypass
Cheap rooms, but every sight is a long auto ride away. Bhopal's sights sit on the western lake side, so base there instead.

Is Bhopal safe?
- Bhopal itself is a routine city visit, with standard city precautions.
- Take local advice before off route rural travel in far eastern Madhya Pradesh, where Maoist activity affects remote rural districts.
- Do not swim in either lake, carry water in summer heat, and keep food away from monkeys at Bhojpur and Van Vihar.
- Drink bottled or filtered water only and use app cabs or registered autos after dark.
Bhopal travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Do not plan a museum day on a Monday, when the Tribal Museum, Museum of Mankind, Bharat Bhavan and State Museum all close.
- Do not plan Van Vihar or the Sanchi museum on a Friday, when both close.
- Do not count on the Lake Princess motor cruise, shut after the 2023 tribunal ban on motorised lake operations.
- Map pins for old city food spots such as Jameel Hotel are unreliable, so ask locally once in the Chowk.
Getting around Bhopal: public transport and more
- Use app cabs and registered autos in the city, and agree or meter auto fares before setting off.
- Hire a car with a driver by the day for Sanchi, Bhimbetka and Bhojpur rather than stitching together buses.
- Sanchi is about 46 km and 1 to 1.5 hours by road, with only a few local trains a day to Sanchi station.
- Bhimbetka is about 45 km south inside the Ratapani sanctuary area and needs a hired car, with no useful public transport.
