Things to do in Vrindavan
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Vrindavan
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best season, late Oct to mid Mar: cool mornings, the parikrama a pleasure, Diwali, Kartik and the run-up to Holi inside the window.
Shoulder: April warms fast after Holi; September is green and humid as the monsoon retreats.
Worst months: 40 to 47C heat, dust, and sightseeing sane only at dawn and dusk.
Monsoon: lush Braj, Jhulan Leela swings and Janmashtami crowds, with a high Yamuna that can flood ghat stretches.
What's on
- Lathmar Holi, Barsana and Nandgaon Braj Holi week, usually late Feb to Mar, by Hindu calendar
Women with stout sticks playfully beat shield-bearing men, re-enacting Krishna teasing Radha; arrive early, crowds are extreme.
- Phoolon Wali Holi at Banke Bihari Braj Holi week, days before main Holi, by Hindu calendar
Priests shower the crowd with tonnes of flower petals for about 20 to 30 minutes; no colour, no water, the week's most beautiful event.
- Widows' Holi at Gopinath Temple A few days before main Holi, around Rangbhari Ekadashi, by Hindu calendar
Hundreds of ashram widows play Holi with flowers and gulal, a social reform milestone since 2013; attend respectfully and ask before photographing.
- Krishna Janmashtami Bhadrapada Krishna Ashtami, usually Aug or Sep, by Hindu calendar
Midnight birth rituals across Braj; Banke Bihari's once-a-year Mangala Aarti is tightly controlled and crowds are the year's second biggest.
- Kartik Month and Dev Deepawali Kartik month, usually mid Oct to mid Nov, closing at Kartik Purnima, by Hindu calendar
The holiest Vaishnava month: dawn bathing, nightly lamps on the Yamuna and ghats lined with diyas at the close.
- Govardhan Puja and Annakut Day after Diwali, usually Oct or Nov, by Hindu calendar
A mountain of food is offered at Govardhan and across town; lakhs walk the Govardhan parikrama on the biggest days.
- Radhashtami in Barsana Bhadrapada, usually Aug or Sep, by Hindu calendar
Radha's appearance day and Barsana's greatest festival after Holi, centred on the Radha Rani Temple.
- Jhulan Leela Shravana, usually Jul or Aug, by Hindu calendar
Monsoon swing festival, with deities on flower-decked swings in temple after temple during the rains.

Think twice about
- Banke Bihari temple lanes, Loi Bazaar and Gotam Nagar core
No car access, temple loudspeakers before dawn, open drains in stretches, the densest monkey population and festival crowd crush. Visit on foot, sleep elsewhere.
- Far highway properties beyond the Chhatikara hotel strip
Every darshan becomes a 30 to 45 minute commute through truck traffic, and the room saving is spent on cars and lost dawns.
- Mathura city as a base for a Vrindavan trip
Only 11 km away but a different town in feel and rhythm. Split the stay or base in the town your days are actually in.

What to book ahead
- MVT Guesthouse & Restaurant: weeks ahead
- Hotel Shri Radha Nikunj at Prem Mandir: weeks ahead
- ISKCON Guesthouse: weeks ahead
- Radisson Hotel Vrindavan: weeks ahead
- Nidhivan Sarovar Portico Vrindavan: weeks ahead
- Hotel Idhayan Palace: a few days ahead
- Ananda Krishna Van: a few days ahead
- Book rooms weeks ahead for Holi, Janmashtami and Kartik; festival prices multiply and the good addresses sell out.
- Confirm temple darshan timings on official temple sites the week you go; festival days rewrite every schedule.
- Arrange Mathura station pickups through your hotel on festival dates, when the forecourt is a scrum.
- There is no official paid VIP darshan at Banke Bihari; do not buy one.
Is Vrindavan safe?
- Monkeys snatch glasses and phones and trade them for mango juice; use cords and zipped pockets, carry no visible food, and let a local negotiate any retrieval.
- Crowd crush at Banke Bihari on festival days is the main risk; skip peak windows with children or elderly travellers and fix a regroup point outside.
- The Yamuna at Vrindavan is heavily polluted; join the aarti and float a lamp but do not swim or take a full dip.
- Drink bottled or hotel filtered water only, and eat street food hot from busy stalls.
Vrindavan travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- The priest and guide attachment script in the Banke Bihari lanes and at Nidhivan, ending in a pressured donation demand; agree fees in advance and decline detours.
- Unasked tilaks, tied threads and photos that are then charged for; a raised palm and a polite no ends most of it.
- Sunset surge pricing on Keshi Ghat boats; fix per boat price, duration and the aarti hold before boarding.
Getting around Vrindavan: public transport and more
- Railhead is Mathura Junction, about 11 km away; Delhi is roughly 160 km and 3 to 3.5 hours via the Yamuna Expressway.
- Inside town use e-rickshaws: shared seats 10 to 30 rupees, private hops 100 to 200 rupees, full parikrama 300 to 500 rupees; agree fares before boarding.
- Cars cannot enter the old-town core; the last stretch to Banke Bihari, Nidhivan and Radha Raman is always on foot.
- Book a car and driver through your hotel at a written day rate for Govardhan, Barsana and Gokul excursion days.
