Things to do in Ujjain
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Ujjain
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best months, with pleasant weather around 20 degrees in the day and cold misty mornings mid winter.
Worst for heat at roughly 42 to 45 degrees, with thin crowds and lower prices as the only compensation.
Shravan and monsoon together, with sawari processions, hotel prices two to three times normal on Mondays, and flood risk at the ghats.
Late monsoon, still watch the Shipra level and district advisories before planning ghat time.
Kartik Mela runs through November at the ghats, a gentler family festival in the best weather of the year.
What's on
- Mahashivratri February or March, lunar date varies
Mahakaleshwar's biggest annual night, with the temple open about 44 hours and darshan queues of 6 to 10 hours.
- Shravan Sawari Mondays in Shravan, July to August
Mahakal's royal processions through the city, each drawing an estimated 2 to 5 lakh devotees.
- Nag Panchami July or August, lunar date varies
The only 24 hours of the year when the Nagchandreshwar Temple in the Mahakal complex opens.
- Simhastha Kumbh Mela 27 March to 27 May 2028, Amrit Snan 9 April, 24 April and 8 May 2028
Ujjain's Kumbh every 12 years, with official expectations above 14 crore devotees across the event.
- Kartik Mela November, month long
A month long fair at the ghats with rides, bazaars and Malwa food stalls.
Best things to do in Ujjain
Shri Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga Temple
One of twelve Jyotirlingas and the only one facing south, with the pre dawn Bhasma Aarti as the defining Ujjain experience.
Mahakal Lok Corridor
A vast sculpted corridor of Shiva stories around the temple, free to walk and at its best when lit after dark.
Harsiddhi Mata Temple
A major Shaktipeeth a short walk from Mahakaleshwar, famous for twin lamp towers lit with over a thousand lamps.
Shree Kal Bhairav Temple
Ujjain's guardian deity in fierce form, known for the ritual liquor offering devotees bring to the deity.
Ram Ghat
The oldest sacred bathing ghat on the Shipra, where the evening aarti sends hundreds of leaf lamps afloat.
Chintaman Ganesh Temple
Ujjain's beloved Ganesh temple across the Shipra, calmer and more local in feel than the Mahakal crush.
Sandipani Ashram
The ashram where Krishna is said to have studied under Guru Sandipani, quiet and rewarding if you know the story.
Jantar Mantar, Ujjain
The oldest of Jai Singh's observatories in India's prime meridian city, best with a guide to explain the instruments.
Where to stay in Ujjain
Freeganj / Madhav Nagar
best all round base
The widest choice of real restaurants, the easiest autos and cabs, and calmer nights than the temple lanes.
Mahakal Temple area
first darshan first trip
Walk to the temple at any hour, which matters most for a pre dawn Bhasma Aarti reporting time.
Indore Road / Nanakheda corridor
comfort, pools and parking
The large hotels and the resort sit here, with quiet and space at the cost of a drive to the temple.
Think twice about
- Innermost Mahakal temple lanes at festival peak
In Shravan and on Mahashivratri the lanes become a barricaded crowd zone with pre dawn loudspeakers and queues at your door. Magnificent for pilgrimage, poor for rest or step free access.
- Low lanes immediately on Ram Ghat in monsoon
The Shipra floods here in heavy rain and Ram Ghat temples have been submerged with feet of water over the bridge. Take the ghat view at aarti time and sleep on higher ground.
- Far highway properties beyond Nanakheda without a car
No autos cruise there at 2am, so a cheap room becomes a transport dead end on the one morning your trip depends on a confirmed cab.

A day of food, drink, sights and getting around, before the room
What to book ahead
- Shri Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga Temple: weeks ahead
- Omkareshwar Temple: a few days ahead
- Ahilya Fort: a few days ahead
- Jahaz Mahal: a few days ahead
- Rasmantra By Shiva Group: a few days ahead
- Hotel Anjushree: weeks ahead
- Rudraksh Club & Resort: weeks ahead
- Book Bhasma Aarti only on the official temple portal as soon as the window opens, with ID and photos for every attendee ready.
- Print the Bhasma Aarti pass, because phones are not allowed inside the temple.
- Book hotels at least three weeks ahead for Shravan Mondays and Mahashivratri, and months ahead for Simhastha 2028.
- Fix day trip cabs for Omkareshwar, Maheshwar and Mandu the day before with the return time agreed.
Is Ujjain safe?
- Crowd crush is the main risk, so fix a regroup point outside the temple complex and keep documents in a front zipped layer.
- Do not bathe at Ram Ghat in monsoon flow, when the Shipra floods and runs fast and officials warn people to stay at the bank.
- Carry water on every temple circuit, because queues are long and the Bhasma Aarti means hours sitting or standing.
- Police 100, ambulance 108, fire 101.
Ujjain travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Tout passes promising guaranteed Bhasma Aarti at many times the official price, when the temple sells only through its own portal.
- Unregistered guides at the temple gates, so hire through a hotel or MP Tourism and agree the price first.
- Mahakal Lok at midday in full heat with no shade, when the same corridor at 7pm is the praised version.
- Expecting non vegetarian food or nightlife near the temple, when Indore is the place for both.
Getting around Ujjain: public transport and more
- Walk the Mahakal, Harsiddhi, Mahakal Lok and Ram Ghat cluster, and hire an auto or car by the half day for the wider temple circuit.
- Shared autos are cheap and plentiful in the centre but scarce at the edges at night, so pre book pre dawn transport.
- The nearest airport is Indore, about 55 km and 1.5 hours away, and Ujjain Junction is the rail hub.
- On festival days vehicle entry near the temple is restricted, so any cab plan needs a walking fallback.
