Best time to visit Toliara
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Cyclone season, roughly January to March, with heat, flooding risk, washed out roads and stopped boats.
Rains ease and roads become more predictable, a good shoulder window with fewer visitors.
Dry and cooler, the best overall window, with humpback whales from late June to mid September.
Heating up and still mostly dry, with whale season tailing off in early October and first rains possible in November.
Wet season and cyclone risk return, heat builds, and domestic flights strain at Christmas and New Year.

Is Toliara safe?
- Criminal gangs have attacked vehicles in convoy on the RN7, and dahalo violence in the south has caused fatalities. Use a recognised operator.

- Cyclone season is roughly January to March. Boats stop, secondary roads can become impassable and bridges can wash away in the wet season.
Toliara travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Selling Toliara town as a beach resort. The lagoon and sand are at Ifaty and Anakao, reached by track and boat.
- Treating published RN7 drive times as promises. Potholes, checkpoints, trucks and rain stretch every leg.
- Buying rosewood, tortoiseshell, coral, shells or other protected products, which it is illegal to collect, buy or export.
Getting around Toliara: public transport and more
- The RN7 is 923 km from Antananarivo. Allow about 14 hours by private car in dry weather and split taxi-brousse travel over two to three days.
- Domestic flights to Toliara airport, code TLE, take about 1 hour 45 minutes, but schedules change and sources disagree on frequency, so book and reconfirm.
- Ifaty is 27 km north and takes about 1 hour to 1 hour 30 minutes by sandy track. Anakao is reached by a morning boat of about 1 hour to 1 hour 30 minutes.
- In town, use pousse-pousses and taxis you trust, agree the price first, and do not walk back from bars or restaurants in the dark.
