Things to do in Andasibe
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Andasibe
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Sweet spot: lower rainfall, warming weather, fewer crowds than July and August, and lemur babies from October.
Drier season window with workable trails; July and August are peak crowds, June to August nights are cold and damp.
Many lemurs give birth around October, birds breed, and reptiles are more active, as rain begins to rise.
Wettest period; muddiest trails, Mantadia track may be impassable, and RN2 delays are most likely.
Cyclone season for Madagascar, with disruption risk to east coast roads and power.

Think twice about
- RN2 and the village to park road on foot after dark
Both roads are unlit and carry fast traffic. Walk by day, and use lodge transport or a guided night walk after dark.
- Mantadia track in heavy rain without local advice
The rough track north can become impassable in the wettest months. Take your lodge or guide call on the day, not a fixed plan.
- Antananarivo protest areas on the transit day
Demonstrations can turn disruptive. Avoid large gatherings in the capital en route.

What to book ahead
- Andasibe-Mantadia National Park: a few days ahead
- Mantadia Lodge: weeks ahead
- Vakona Forest Lodge: weeks ahead
- Book lodges weeks ahead for July and August and for Christmas and New Year, when the small lodge stock fills.

- Book your Antananarivo driver for the RN2 days ahead; little else needs booking before arrival.
Is Andasibe safe?
- Named areas in the west, south and centre of Madagascar are to be avoided; Andasibe and the RN2 east are not among them.
- Taxi-brousse road deaths are frequent, demonstrations can turn disruptive, and cyclone season runs from November to April.
- Andasibe is a year-round malaria area; take prophylaxis advice, use nets and repellent, and carry medical evacuation insurance.
Andasibe travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- A day trip from Antananarivo sold as an Andasibe trip, when the dawn walk and the night walk are the point.
- Vakona sold as wild lemur watching; it is a habituated island encounter, good on those terms only.
- A fixed Mantadia plan with no rain fallback in the wettest months.
Getting around Andasibe: public transport and more
- Antananarivo to Andasibe is about 145 to 160 km on the RN2; plan 4 to 5 hours by private car, longer by taxi-brousse via Moramanga.
- There is no regular Antananarivo to Andasibe train to plan a trip on; go by road and travel by day.
- Analamazaotra, VOIMMA and Mitsinjo are walkable or a short ride from the village; Mantadia needs a hired 4x4 for a full day.
