Is Fianarantsoa safe?
- Robbery and theft are the standing risks, including armed robbery on main roads at night, poor roads and the risk of unrest. Travel in daylight and use hotel or recognised operator transport after dark.
- Medical care is very limited and serious emergencies need evacuation, so carry evacuation insurance.
- In cyclone season, November to April, allow spare days: roads can become impassable and the FCE is prone to landslides.
Fianarantsoa travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Do not build an itinerary on a printed FCE timetable: the through service to Manakara is unconfirmed and the line was interrupted again in July 2025.
- Do not treat Ranomafana as a town sight: it is a 65 km excursion and a rushed day trip short changes the park.
- Listings for small restaurants go stale fast: check La Surprise Betsileo is open on arrival instead of planning around it.
Getting around Fianarantsoa: public transport and more
- Antananarivo to Fianarantsoa is about 400 km on the RN7 and a full 8 to 10 hour driving day, so break it in Antsirabe or Ambositra.
- Ranomafana is about 65 km east and 1.5 to 2 hours each way, Ambalavao is about 56 km south and Anja is 12 to 13 km beyond it.
- Use a recognised operator or hotel arranged transport for road legs and never plan RN7 driving at night.
