Things to do in Antsirabe
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Antsirabe
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Dry season sweet spot, with the coldest nights from June to August, when July lows average about 7 degrees C and can drop toward zero.
Rainy season, wettest around January, when the Tritriva dirt road deteriorates and RN7 journey times lengthen.
Shoulder months, warmer than mid winter and mostly drier than the rainy season, a good compromise for the lakes circuit.

Avenue de l'Indépendance
The broad colonial avenue best seen by pousse-pousse, linking the station, monument and faded spa era landmarks.
Gare d'Antsirabe
The 1923 colonial railway station, a handsome exterior sight, but do not count on a passenger train from it.
Our Lady Of La Salette Cathedral
A large brick cathedral in the city centre, most rewarding as part of a slow walk around the old spa quarter.
Fahaleovantena Tribes Monument
The central monument naming Madagascar tribes, a useful landmark and a quick primer on the island diversity.
Asabotsy Market
Antsirabe biggest public market, a dense Saturday peak of produce, clothes and crafts where bargaining is normal.
Maminirina Corne et Raphia
A zebu horn and raffia workshop where you can watch horn being heated, shaped and polished into finished pieces.
Hotel des Thermes
The grand 1922 spa hotel facade, the clearest surviving symbol of Antsirabe years as a colonial health resort.

Is Antsirabe safe?
- Avoid travel to Tsaratanana, Betroka, the Tsiroanomandidy to Maintirano road, RN34 Miandrivazo to Malaimbandy, RN13 Ihosy to Betroka, and Menabe south of Morondava.
- Criminal gangs have attacked vehicles in convoy on the RN7: keep a high level of vigilance on the RN7, especially at night.
- Travel the RN7 corridor by day with a recognised driver, avoid demonstrations and crowds, and do not display wealth.
- Use care at ATMs and in crowded markets, and avoid walking unlit streets after dark.
Antsirabe travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- The wrong dirt turn to Tritriva strands you on a near-impassable track, so go with a driver who knows the road.
- Treat gemstones offered to tourists as souvenirs, not investments, unless you know the trade.
- Agree every pousse-pousse fare before riding, or the first overpayment anchors every fare after it.
- Confirm whether any driver, tour or hotel price is quoted in EUR or MGA before agreeing.
Getting around Antsirabe: public transport and more
- Use pousse-pousse for short central hops and agree the fare first, indicatively 5,000 to 10,000 MGA for a short in-city ride.
- Hire a car and driver through your hotel for the lakes, Betafo and Ambositra, arranged a day ahead.
- Antsirabe is about 170 km and 3 to 4 hours by road south of Antananarivo on the RN7, and the passenger railway does not run.
- Taxis-brousse leave when full, are frequently overloaded and run to unpredictable times, so allow large buffers.
