Things to do in Mahajanga
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Mahajanga
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Dry season: roads, tracks and the Katsepy boat are most reliable, skies clearest in August, and it is still hot every day.
Rainy and cyclone season: January is the wettest month, secondary roads can become impassable and bridges wash away.
Peak heat: average highs around 31 to 34 C with extreme UV; sightseeing is an early morning and late afternoon activity.
Park guides often recommend September to November for birdwatching at Ankarafantsika.

Think twice about
- Unlit streets away from the Corniche after dark
Do not walk alone in city centres or poorly lit urban areas after dark in Madagascar. Use pre-booked or hotel transport.
- Isolated beaches outside town, alone
Opportunistic attacks and robberies happen at isolated beaches in Madagascar. Go in a group, with local advice, and leave before dark.
