Things to do in Antananarivo
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Antananarivo
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Dry season, best overall: clear views, firm hiking paths and reliable Andasibe roads.
Connoisseur window: warming and mostly dry, jacarandas in bloom, lemur babies from October.
Fine weather but busy with European holidays, so book everything earlier.
Rainy season: green and cheap but storms, low-town flooding and disruption, worst in January and February.

Where to stay in Antananarivo
Isoraka / Antaninarenina
first trip, all-round base
Diplomatic upper-middle town near the best restaurants, walkable by day to the Rova cluster.
Ankorondrano / Tana Waterfront
business, families and anyone nervous about Tana
Planned business district with international hotels, a mall and the city's most reliable infrastructure.
Ivandry / Alarobia
longer stays and birders
Leafy villa and guesthouse streets near Tsarasaotra Park, quiet and car-dependent.
Ivato
flight logistics only
Airport hotels that solve a late arrival or early departure, but a poor sightseeing base.
Think twice about
- Analakely / Avenue de l'Indépendance / Tsaralalana-Soarano
Visit by day, do not sleep there: demonstrations flashpoint, pickpocketing centre and worst traffic and fumes.
- Isotry, 67 Hectares and Anosibe
Dense, flood-prone low districts named in security reporting, with poor lighting and drainage. Do not base in.
- South of Lake Anosy and national-road corridors
Rooms sold as central can be 12 km out and cost the trip in transfer time. Check the map before booking.

Is Antananarivo safe?
- Pickpocketing and phone snatching are the main risk in Analakely, around Soarano station and in markets.
- At night go car door to door with a hotel-called driver. Keep doors locked and windows up in traffic.
- If a demonstration crowd forms in the centre, leave and re-plan away from Analakely and Lake Anosy.
- Road safety is the biggest danger: a good driver with a maintained vehicle is a safety purchase.
Antananarivo travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Tsimbazaza Zoo as an animal experience: poor upkeep in recent reviews. Choose Lemurs' Park instead.
- Andasibe or Ampefy as a rushed same-day tour. Overnight with a direct driver is better and often cheaper.
- Lake Anosy as a walk: photograph it from above, it is polluted and a flashpoint at street level.
- First-price craft and street vanilla in Analakely: compare, bargain politely and buy from fixed shops for quality.
Getting around Antananarivo: public transport and more
- Hire a private car and driver by the day, with fuel, park entries and guide fees explicit in the written quote.
- Taxis are unmetered: agree the fare before getting in and have your hotel or restaurant call at night.
- Walk Haute Ville and Isoraka by day only. Do not walk between venues at night, even short distances.
- Ivato airport is 15 km away, 30 minutes with no traffic and up to 1.5 hours at peak. Pre-book the transfer.
