Things to do in Tioman Island
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Tioman Island
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Season opens fully: calm seas, good diving, turtle nesting begins, quieter and hotter than the peak.
Core season and best diving visibility, with the busiest weekends in June to August and a calmer September.
Shoulder month: still a good trip early on, with monsoon seas and ferry risk arriving late in the month.
Northeast monsoon: rough seas, reduced and cancellable ferries, partial closures, but the island does not shut completely and Juara surf season runs.
What's on
- Tioman Surf Festival January or February, dates vary by year
A surf festival on the monsoon swell at Juara, the one island event worth timing a trip around.
- Turtle nesting season March to October, peak mid season
Green and hawksbill turtles nest at Juara; the turtle project runs patrols, hatchery work and hatchling releases.
- Hari Raya Aidilfitri Around 10 March in 2027, lunar calendar
Malaysia's biggest holiday period; ferries and resorts fill and some village businesses close.
- Chinese New Year January or February, lunar calendar
A peak domestic and Singaporean travel window inside the monsoon months; ferry seats are the constraint.
Best things to do in Tioman Island

The island benchmark dive school since 1986, with PADI courses from beginner to instructor at ABC and Salang.
Tioman Dive Centre
A smaller SSI dive centre by Tekek jetty, with published course prices and a personal, small group style.
Juara Scuba Academy
East coast diving from Juara, with fun dives and PADI and SSI courses so a Juara stay can still dive.
Renggis Island
The sheltered house reef off Berjaya beach for first snorkels and dives, with turtles and reef sharks.
Tiger Reef
The headline boat dive, a current washed pinnacle with soft corals, sea fans and schooling jacks.
Soyak Island
Salang's offshore reef for snorkelling and training dives, plus a soft coral wreck for certified divers.
Pulau Tulai

Where to stay in Tioman Island
Tekek
dive courses, short trips and services
The main village with the jetty, clinic, ATM, duty free shops and the Juara road head, but the weakest beach.
Air Batang (ABC)
first trips, divers and all round stays
A boardwalk village of chalets, restaurants and dive shops with sunsets, walkable from Tekek.
Salang
divers and the most social village stay
Budget chalets and dive shops by the Soyak reef, with the Coral Island boats at its jetty.
Juara
escape, turtles and monsoon surf
The only east coast village, a long sunrise beach reached by the cross island road or by boat from Tekek.
Paya
quiet resort packages
A mangrove and jungle resort village south of Tekek, with a waterfall walk and the Kajang trailhead side.
Southern coves and resort beaches
couples, seclusion and resort only trips
Standalone resorts on their own beaches, reached by boat, where the transfer is part of the seclusion.
Think twice about
- Tekek as a beach base
Tekek has the island's services but its weakest main village beach. Base there for a dive course or a short trip, not for the sand.
- Remote southern cove resorts as a touring base
Japamala, Bagus Place and Tunamaya are reached by boat. Every off resort dive, meal or village trip becomes a transfer negotiation.
- Juara in the monsoon for non surfers
The east coast takes the rough seas first, boats stop, and the cross island road is the only land link on departure day.

Is Tioman Island safe?
- Tekek has a clinic but no full hospital; serious cases go to the mainland by boat or air when weather allows, so carry evacuation and dive insurance.
- Sandflies bite on the ABC and Salang beaches and the itch arrives a day later; use repellent and a mat, and wear closed shoes on jungle paths.
Tioman Island travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Treating the monthly ferry timetable as a promise, and paying resort prices for a village snorkelling day reported at RM100 in 2026.
- Expecting duty free to cover everything; the saving is alcohol, cigarettes have been taxed since 2021, and most other goods cost mainland prices or more.
Getting around Tioman Island: public transport and more
- Ferries from Mersing and Tanjung Gemok take about 1.5 to 2 hours, stop in order at Genting, Paya, Tekek, ABC and Salang, and run on monthly tide dependent timetables.
- On the island walk the west coast paths, use boat taxis between villages, and take 4WD taxis on the one Tekek to Juara road. There is no scheduled flight; plan on the ferry.
