Things to do in Ipoh
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Ipoh
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Tends to have the least rainfall, most comfortable for cave temples, hikes, golf and Cameron views.
A drier spell with Chinese New Year energy and peak pomelo season, prices and queues spike over CNY itself.
Shoulder and value: hotter with rising rain, fewer crowds and cheaper rooms, manageable with early starts.
Wettest months. Slippery temple steps, river activities subject to cancellation, do not build a trip around hiking and caving.
Wet, close behind October and November, though Ipoh still works as food, museum and hot springs.
What's on
- Chinese New Year January/February
Ipoh's biggest festival, cave temples at their most active and crowded, though many family kopitiams close 1 to 3 days.
- Thaipusam January/February
Kavadi processions at Hindu temples including Kallumalai at Gunung Cheroh, smaller and more local than Batu Caves.
- Hari Raya Aidilfitri End of Ramadan, moves about 11 days earlier yearly
Open houses and rendang tok, with brief kopitiam closures and national travel peaks, book early.
- Ipoh Art Festival August
Smaller draw worth coinciding with, not travelling for alone, verify the specific dates for your year.
- Hungry Ghost / Nine Emperor Gods Festival September to October, lunar
Temple activity and processions in Chinese neighbourhoods, atmospheric Old Town evenings.
- Malaysia Day 16 September
National holiday, a smaller draw worth coinciding with rather than travelling for alone.
- Deepavali October/November
Little India on Jalan Sultan Yussuf lights up and banana leaf restaurants are festive, in the wettest window.

Where to stay in Ipoh
Old Town
first trip, best base for most visitors
Walk to Concubine Lane, murals, the great kopitiams, Han Chin Pet Soo and the station, with heritage boutiques on the food crawl.
New Town / Jalan Sultan Idris Shah / Ipoh Parade / WEIL corridor
comfort, families and drivers
Modern full service hotels, the mall, easier parking and lifts, a short walk or Grab to Old Town.
Canning Garden / Ipoh Garden
repeat visitors and longer stays
Leafy residential areas where Ipoh lives, with Canning dim sum and local cafes, but you need Grab or a car for Old Town.
Tambun
resort stays and 1 to 2 night add ons
Limestone hills, hot springs, space and quiet, but every meal and sight is a drive, so it is a poor sightseeing base.
Think twice about
- Amanjaya Bus Terminal and the Medan Kidd / old bus-station fringe
Transport industrial and food poor after dark, with every sight needing a ride. Greentown is the budget alternative with life.
- Tambun and Gunung Rapat as a pedestrian base
Roads between the sights are fast, pavement free and unlit in stretches. Staying there and walking to dinner is not a plan, use Grab.
- Old Town side lanes after dark
Not threatening but deserted and dim after about 9pm, with patchy lighting and few open doors. Choose New Town or a staffed boutique for a lit walk home.

Is Ipoh safe?
- Ipoh has no severe street homelessness or open drug use district ruling out a whole neighbourhood, it is a calm and generally safe provincial capital.
- Wear bags away from the road against rare snatch theft. Traffic, not crime, is the main hazard, and crossings are advisory.
- Use repellent at dawn and dusk for mosquitoes and dengue, especially in Tambun, gardens and after rain.
Ipoh travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Concubine Lane at noon on Saturday, shoulder to shoulder for souvenirs sold anywhere.
- Lou Wong queues: famous is not best, Cowan Street is the food first pick.
- Tasik Cermin on weekends and holidays, and Lost World on a school holiday Saturday.
- Day tripping Ipoh from KL to do it all, and tourist markup white coffee souvenirs in Concubine Lane.
- Gerbang Malam Night Market as a must do: fine for snacks, mostly generic goods for shopping.
Getting around Ipoh: public transport and more
- ETS train is best: KL Sentral to Ipoh about 2 hrs 15 min to 2 hrs 45 min, Butterworth about 1.5 to 2 hrs.
- Grab is the in town transport system. Old and New Town are walkable, but cave temples, Tambun, Gopeng and golf need wheels.
- Driving from KL is about 200km and 2 hours in clear traffic, 3.5 plus hours on holiday peaks, with Touch n Go or RFID for tolls.
- Heat rule: outdoor sights 7 to 11am and after 4pm. Midday is for museums, cafes, malls or a nap.
