Where to stay in Kota Kinabalu
City Centre - Gaya Street / Waterfront / Jesselton Point
first trip, all-round base
Walk to boats, kopitiams, markets, malls and most restaurants, with the airport 15 minutes by Grab.
Sutera Harbour
resort-in-the-city, golfers
Marina resort with golf, pools and restaurants, ten minutes south without giving up city access.
Tanjung Aru
sunset resort, near airport
On the sunset beach itself, quieter at night and ten minutes from both centre and airport.
Tuaran
destination resort stay
Long private beach and nature reserve 40 to 50 minutes north, chosen as the trip not as a KK base.
Gaya Island
island splurge
Private bay villas 15 minutes by resort boat, extraordinary for two nights but impractical as a day trip base.
Karambunai
beach and golf destination stay
Big resort on a long quieter beach 35 minutes north with its own golf course, isolated for dining.
Think twice about
- Sembulan / Kampung Sembulan
Partly rundown riverfront, ageing budget hotels and dimmer streets at night, minutes from better Gaya Street.
- Sinsuran / Segama back blocks
Back lanes get quiet, poorly lit and seedy late. Waterfront road hotels are fine, check the exact pin.
- Filipino Market / stilt-village edges
Eat on the main road, do not wander or sleep behind the market in unlit stilt settlements that are homes.
- 1Borneo / Sepanggar
Commute trap 20 to 40 minutes north with tour pickup surcharges. Base here only for Universiti Malaysia Sabah.

Kota Kinabalu travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Seafood by weight everywhere: confirm species, live weight, price per weight and cooking charge before cooking.
- Buy boat tickets at terminal counters, not kerbside touts selling bundled island packages.
- Market pearls are mostly freshwater or imitation. Buy certified South Sea pearls only from a fixed price jeweller.
- Do not do TARP plus Mantanani plus Mengalum in a short trip. Pick one close or one premium island day.
Getting around Kota Kinabalu: public transport and more
- Grab is the default: cheap, air conditioned and honest priced, with the airport about 15 minutes from the centre.
- Walk the Gaya Street to waterfront to Jesselton Point web in the morning or evening, avoid midday heat.
- Island boats for the marine park run from Jesselton Point only. Buy inside the terminal and keep the return ticket.
