Things to do in Langkawi
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Langkawi
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best months, peak dry: driest, calmest seas, best Payar and Koh Lipe conditions and clearest SkyCab views, at the highest prices. February is the sweet spot.
Very good shoulder: November starts the dry season at shoulder prices, March is still dry early but Payar closes 1 March and heat peaks.
Mid season: hot with moderate rain, greener and cheaper, waterfalls improving. Plan outdoor mornings, and expect domestic crowds in school holidays.
Worst months: wettest, roughest seas, most ferry cancellations, cloudiest SkyCab days and higher stinger risk, at the lowest prices.
What's on
- Royal Langkawi International Regatta 20-25 January
Southeast Asia's regatta season opener at the Royal Langkawi Yacht Club in Kuah, with 30 plus yachts and marina parties.
- Ironman Malaysia and Ironman 70.3 Langkawi late October / November
One of Asia's hardest Ironman courses, centred on Cenang and the airport coast. Note road closures and full hotels that weekend.
- LIMA, Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 20-24 May, biennial in odd years
One of the world's largest air and naval shows. Hotels and flights spike island wide, so go for it deliberately or avoid those dates. Next expected 2027.
- Chinese New Year January / February
Domestic tourism floods the island, Kuah seafood and night markets are at their best and busiest, and Cenang sells out.
- Hari Raya Aidilfitri March / April, shifting
Crowd and price levels spike with domestic travel. Ramadan before it is quieter, with many local eateries closed by day.
- Deepavali October / November
A peak domestic travel period that decides crowd and price levels more than any local festival.
Best things to do in Langkawi
Langkawi SkyCab
One of the world's steepest cable cars up Gunung Machinchang, best at opening on your clearest morning.
Langkawi Sky Bridge
A 125 m curved bridge suspended high above the rainforest, with views to the Andaman and southern Thailand.
Kilim Karst Geoforest Park
Boat mangrove channels, limestone karsts and caves, and watch eagles hunt naturally with a guide who does not feed wildlife.
Tanjung Rhu Beach
The island's best beach: pale sand, casuarina shade, clear dry season water and islets you can walk toward at low tide.
Telaga Tujuh Waterfall
Seven natural rock pools linked by a cascade near the SkyCab, with a steep, slippery climb to the upper pools.
Temurun Waterfall
Langkawi's tallest waterfall, with a large cold plunge pool a short walk from parking and an easy swim.
Pantai Cenang
A mediocre swim but the island's sunset social beach, with bars, beanbags and fire shows along a west facing strip.
Pasar Malam Kuah
The biggest, most local night market, on Wednesday and Saturday, for satay, ayam percik, nasi lemak and laksa Kedah.
Where to stay in Langkawi
Pantai Tengah
best all-round base for most trips
Quieter than Cenang, minutes from its restaurants, with better resorts and the same west facing sunset.
Pantai Cenang
first-timers, nightlife and budget choice
The island's only real strip, with beach, malls, bars and the widest spread of cheap rooms, but noisy and commercialised.
Datai Bay
luxury seclusion and nature
A rainforest beach crescent in the far north west where the resort is the holiday, 35 to 45 minutes from Cenang.
Tanjung Rhu
quiet luxury beach and Kilim days
The island's best beach on the north east tip, minutes from Kilim jetty and under half an hour from Cenang.
Pantai Kok / Teluk Nibung
resort families who want the SkyCab nearby
Green, spread out resorts near Oriental Village and Telaga Harbour, with limited eating out beyond the resorts.
Telaga Harbour
value luxury, ferries and the SkyCab
Handy for Telaga ferries and the SkyCab, at a step below Datai and Four Seasons prices.
Think twice about
- Kuah as a beach base
There is no swimmable resort beach in town, only a harbour and reclaimed esplanade. One night either side of a ferry is sensible, a beach week is a mistake.
- Jalan Pantai Cenang main-road strip
Busy public beach, jetski and parasail operators, late bars and constant traffic. Light sleepers, young children and romantic trips should stay back or in Pantai Tengah.
- Remote north and east coast villa listings without a car
Rural listings in Ulu Melaka, Ayer Hangat and Padang Lalang strand guests: Grab thins late, every beach is a long drive and there is no walkable dinner.
Best restaurants in Langkawi
Nasi Dagang Pak Malau
Coconut and fenugreek rice with tuna curry by the paddy fields, the single food stop to prioritise, before 11am.
Wonderland Food Store
Open air Chinese seafood by weight in Kuah: butter prawns, salted egg crab and steamed grouper for Malaysian families.
Orkid Ria Seafood Restaurant
Cenang's big tank front seafood hall for grilled tiger prawns, butter garlic lobster and steamed fish.
The Pavilion, The Datai Langkawi
Open air Thai dining on stilts in the rainforest canopy, routinely called the best Thai table in Langkawi.
The Gulai House, The Datai Langkawi
Refined Malay and Indian curries in a kampung house setting at The Datai, worth one splurge evening.
Kayu Puti
Overwater special occasion dining on the St. Regis lagoon, contemporary Asian Western plates and sunset from the deck.
The Cliff Langkawi
Clifftop Malay European dining with the Cenang strip's best sunset view, worth it for the rail table at dusk.
Fat Cupid
A family run garden restaurant for Nyonya and Malay home cooking like curry kapitan, rendang and roti jala.
Outdoor things to do in Langkawi
The Els Club Teluk Datai
An Ernie Els championship course through rainforest to the Andaman, with no bunkers and five holes along the water.
Gunung Raya Golf Resort
The mid range local round, a Max Wexler design in the Gunung Raya foothills, if Teluk Datai is full or over budget.
99 East Golf Club
The island's third course near Kuah, an honest alternative round rather than a destination course.
Dev's Adventure Tours
Guided mangrove kayaking through narrow Kilim and Kubang Badak channels a boat cannot enter, with no eagle feeding.
Mega Water Sports
A guided four hour jet ski tour of five to eight southern islets, best on the calmer morning departure.
Pulau Payar Marine Park
The only real reef day from Langkawi, with coral gardens, reef sharks and a supervised intro dive for first timers.
JungleWalla Tours
Naturalist led rainforest walks for hornbills by day and colugos, flying squirrels and slow loris on the night walk.
Gunung Raya
A 7.9 km primary forest trail to the 881 m summit, about four and a half hours return, with hornbills and langurs.
Best hotels in Langkawi
The Datai Langkawi
The island's defining luxury hotel, rainforest and beach villas with resident naturalists and a private feeling beach.
Four Seasons Resort Langkawi
Pavilions and pool villas on a mile long beach by the Kilim karsts, with the strongest family luxury programme.
The Ritz-Carlton, Langkawi
Contemporary villas in old rainforest on a private bay, with a strong spa, kids club and polished service.
The Danna Langkawi
Colonial styled resort with one of Malaysia's largest infinity pools, a step below Datai prices and handy for ferries.
Casa del Mar, Langkawi
A 34 room boutique resort on the quiet end of Cenang beach, the couples pick without the strip's chaos.
Pelangi Beach Resort & Spa, Langkawi
Large Malay style wooden chalet resort with two big pools and long beach frontage, the family workhorse of Cenang.
PARKROYAL Langkawi Resort
The modern mid range family pick in Pantai Tengah, chosen for facilities rather than boutique character.
Aloft Langkawi Pantai Tengah
The younger, cheaper design option of the Pantai Tengah mid range pair, walkable to Cenang's restaurants.

Is Langkawi safe?
- Low crime. Realistic risks are traffic and scooters, sun, sea and monkeys. Do not learn to ride a scooter here.
- Box jellyfish occur seasonally in wetter months and after storms. Ask locally that day, wear a rash guard, and use vinegar as first aid.
- Never feed macaques at Seven Wells or Kilim, and leave waterfall water if it discolours or rises after upstream rain.
- This is a conservative Muslim majority island: swimwear belongs on the beach or at the pool, and cover up in Kuah, villages and cultural sites.
Langkawi travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Shared island hopping at the beach tout price is rushed and crowded, with routine eagle feeding. Go private and early, or not at all.
- Cenang strip seafood with no priced menu or tank weights shown. Insist on the per 100 g price and weighed total before cooking.
- Underwater World, Oriental Village, MAHA Tower and Eagle Square are fillers and photo stops, not headline days.
- Unlicensed Cenang jetski and parasail touts. Use established operators and photograph existing craft damage before any rental.
Getting around Langkawi: public transport and more
- No usable public transport. Rent a car for good roads and light traffic, use Grab island wide, or hire a private driver by the day with stops and price agreed in writing.
- Fly to Langkawi International Airport from Kuala Lumpur in under an hour. Ferries from Kuah serve the mainland, Penang seasonally and Koh Lipe in season, and cancel in rough weather.
