Things to do in Kuching
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Kuching
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Drier window and best window overall, with June to August the sweet spot and lower tide wetlands cruises.
Shoulder months with good trips possible, greener and quieter but a higher rain tax.
Northeast monsoon peak with heaviest rain, closures most likely and the hardest Semenggoh fruiting stretch.
Fruiting season begins and Semenggoh orangutan appearances become least reliable through March.

Where to stay in Kuching

Padungan
foodie and value base
Older Chinatown coffee shop belt with laksa and kolo mee on the doorstep, a short walk or cheap Grab to the Waterfront.
Damai / Santubong
festival, golf and nature add-on nights
Saves the shuttle for the Cultural Village, golf and beach days, but strands you from city dining as a whole trip base.
Think twice about
- Airport / BDC / Jalan Lapangan Terbang corridor
Highway and mall landscape built for transit nights, needing a Grab for every sight, meal and walk.
- Petra Jaya and far Jalan Matang / Batu Kawa sprawl
Residential Kuching with sparse late dining and long Grabs. Petra Jaya is a visit for the fort, cakes and Cat Museum, not a base.
- Unlit riverside kampung lanes late at night
The esplanade is well lit and busy, but dark north bank lanes are not shortcuts. Use the bridge or a Grab.
- Damai as a first timer's only base
A lovely beach resort plus a week of long round trips to everything in the city. Split the stay instead.

Is Kuching safe?
- Never swim in rivers or estuaries because saltwater crocodiles are present, and keep off mudbanks.
- Heat and humidity are the main spoiler, so do jungle in the morning and carry water and electrolytes.
- Secure food from macaques, use repellent year round, and accept operator calls when rain closes caves or trails.
Kuching travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- At Top Spot, agree price per weight and cooking charge and confirm the total before anything is weighed or cooked.
- Do not treat the Cat Museum as a headline sight, or Damai as a swimming beach.
- Any operator guaranteeing orangutans, dolphins or a rafflesia bloom is not being honest.
Getting around Kuching: public transport and more
- Grab is cheap and plentiful in the centre and the answer to most journeys.
- The old town and Waterfront core is flat and walkable, little else rewards walking between sights.
- Sarawak has its own immigration on arrival, and foreign visitors need the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card before entry.
