Things to do in Thessaloniki, planned over three days
Best time to visit Thessaloniki
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best months, late April to June and September to early October, warm walking weather and a swimmable sea.
Spring is gentle, with the Documentary Festival, Easter processions, carnival weekends and the May Book Fair.
Summer is 33 to 38 degrees, sightseeing belongs early and late, with Halkidiki, boats and Olympus summit season at their best.
Around 15 August independent shops and some tavernas close and Halkidiki peaks, the worst fortnight for a food focused trip.
Autumn is festival season and the best pick for a first trip, with warm sea in September and the film and arts festivals after.
Winter is the quiet bargain at 5 to 14 degrees, with empty museums, taverna season and Pozar steaming at its best.

Worth the trip for
Best things to do in Thessaloniki
Ano Poli
The old town that survived the 1917 fire, with Ottoman houses, Byzantine churches and the best sunset panorama in the city.
Rotunda
A vast Roman brick cylinder turned church then mosque, whose scale and mosaics stop most visitors mid sentence.
White Tower of Thessaloniki
The city symbol and a small history museum, worth it most for the view from the top over the gulf.
Church of Saint Demetrius
The patron saint's great basilica, rebuilt over its crypt and Roman baths, essential for scale and mosaics.
Church of Hagia Sophia
An 8th century church sitting calmly in the shopping centre, a quiet Byzantine counterpoint to the streets outside.
Church of the Acheiropoietos
A 5th century basilica still in use, the connoisseur's pick among the city's UNESCO listed Byzantine churches.
Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki
Northern Greece's great archaeology museum, home to Macedonian gold and the Derveni Krater in a 2 to 3 hour visit.

Where to stay in Thessaloniki
Aristotelous Square / Leoforos Nikis waterfront
first trip, all-round base
The markets, Ladadika and Agia Sofia are minutes away, with the White Tower a flat waterfront stroll and Metro stops at hand.
Ladadika / the Port edge
eating, drinking and groups
The densest run of meze tavernas and bars in colourful old warehouses, lively late and best when nightlife is the point.
Ano Poli
character, quiet and a local stay
Restored houses, cafe terraces and gulf views above the centre, with a steep walk down and bus back up.
East centre / White Tower-museum quarter
polish, easy residential feel and second trips
The museums and Nea Paralia are at hand and the centre is a flat walk west, quieter at night than Ladadika.
Kalamaria
families, seaside second trip or longer stay
A seaside suburb with beach, marina and fish tavernas, now linked to the centre by the Metro extension.
Think twice about
- Vardaris and the streets west/northwest of Dimokratias Square
The city's rough edge around the station and Monastiriou, deserted after midnight with petty crime on empty streets. Pass through by day, do not base here.
- Dendropotamos and the far western districts
Industrial and traffic heavy streets west of the railway station and on arterial roads, short on cafes and a bus ride from everything.
- Pylaia / airport-side and Thermi business parks
Safe and modern but built for conferences and the airport, so you will taxi everywhere and miss the waterfront city.

Is Thessaloniki safe?
- Watch for pickpockets on crowded buses and Metro and for phone theft from cafe tables on Nikis and in Ladadika.
- Avoid deserted streets around Vardaris and the station after midnight and use app taxis late.
- Demonstrations centre on Kamara, Egnatia and Aristotelous and can close streets for hours, and matchdays bring road closures in the east centre.
- Emergency number is 112, tap water is safe, and summer heat over 35 degrees makes water essential for Ano Poli and Olympus.
Thessaloniki travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Nikis Avenue and Aristotelous cafe fronts charge a large premium for the view, so have one ritual coffee then drink inland for half the price.
- The White Tower is a viewpoint with a small museum attached, not a half day attraction, and most visitors finish it in 40 minutes.
- There is no swimming beach in the centre itself, the swim options are Peraia by boat, Aretsou in Kalamaria or Halkidiki.
- Day tours cannot visit Athos and a three peninsula Halkidiki day is mostly a bus day, so choose one leg properly.
- Airport and station taxi special prices above the fixed or metered fare are not a deal.
Getting around Thessaloniki: public transport and more
- Walk the flat centre, a 25 minute radius covers the port, Aristotelous, White Tower and Rotunda, with only Ano Poli steep.
- Metro Line 1 runs New Railway Station to Nea Elvetia, the Kalamaria extension opened August 2026, and one ticket covers Metro and buses at 0.60 euro single.
- Airport bus 01X by day and 01N at night is 2 euro, or use the fixed taxi fare of 25 euro by day and 35 euro at night.
- OASTH buses 22 and 23 go up to Ano Poli, 50 is the Cultural Line loop, and Halkidiki coaches leave from a separate terminal in Pylaia.
- Taxis are dark blue with a white roof, cross town rides are typically 5 to 8 euro, and FreeNow and Uber dispatch licensed taxis.
