Things to do in Athens, planned over three days
Best time to visit Athens
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best months: warm walking weather, everything open, sea swimmable from late May through October.
Spring: wildflowers on Philopappos and the Agora, orange trees in flower, and Orthodox Easter closures.
Summer heat season: sites at 08:00, museums midday, hills and rooftops after 19:00. Mid August empties the city.
Autumn: warm sea in September, prime walking in October, cooler and wetter November with shorter site hours.
Winter is the quiet bargain: 10 to 16 degrees, empty sites, comforting taverna cooking and the lowest hotel rates.

Worth the trip for
Best things to do in Athens
Acropolis of Athens
The Parthenon, Erechtheion and Caryatid porch on one rock. Book the first slot and enter by the museum side.
Acropolis Museum
Original Caryatids and the Parthenon frieze laid out facing the temple itself. Do it in the midday heat.
Ancient Agora of Athens
Where Athenian democracy happened, greener and calmer than the Acropolis, with the best preserved Doric temple.
National Archaeological Museum
Greece's greatest museum: Mycenae gold, the Antikythera Mechanism and monumental bronzes. Pick highlights only.
Benaki Museum
Greek culture from prehistory to the 20th century in a neoclassical mansion, with a beloved rooftop cafe.
Museum of Cycladic Art
White marble Cycladic figurines in a calm, beautifully lit private museum, five minutes from the Benaki.
Mount Lycabettus
The highest point in central Athens, with a chapel and a full panorama. Funicular up, walk down at sunset.
Philopappos Hill
The locals' sunset hill: a pine shaded walk to the best straight on, free view of the Parthenon at dusk.
Where to stay in Athens
Koukaki / Makrigianni
best all-round base, our top pick
Residential streets south of the Acropolis, with the museum on your corner and tavernas that serve the neighbourhood first.
Plaka / Syntagma
first trip and grand-hotel luxury
Postcard lanes under the rock and the practical luxury square, minutes to the Acropolis, airport Metro and Parliament.
Kolonaki
polish, museums and quiet money
Upscale quarter climbing Lycabettus, with the Benaki and Cycladic museums, boutiques and the calmest central nights.
Psyrri / Monastiraki
food, bars and nightlife
Workshop and taverna quarter turned bar district, superb for groups and night people, and loud on Friday and Saturday.
Pangrati / Mets
local, food-first second trip
Leafy squares behind the stadium, home to Spondi, Soil and Akra, with almost no tourists and mostly apartments.
Athens Riviera (Glyfada / Vouliagmeni)
summer, beach-first stay only
Sea at the door, beach clubs, golf and the lake, but every ancient site becomes a day trip from here.
Think twice about
- Streets north and west of Omonia toward Vathis Square
Open drug use and street dealing on some blocks, and dense pickpocketing around the Metro. Use Omonia as a Metro change, not an address.
- Metaxourgeio blocks west and north-west of the centre, away from the restaurant strip
A good restaurant pocket threaded through streets that are deserted and drug affected at night. Visit for dinner, taxi back.
- Exarchia as a base for light sleepers and first-timers
Superb food and street art, but the city's protest flashpoint, heavily graffitied and occasionally tense after dark on demonstration days.
- Psyrri / Monastiraki listings actually north of the Central Market toward Omonia
A known booking trap: hotels claim Psyrri while sitting in the Omonia perimeter. South of Athinas and Evripidou is the sweet spot.
Best restaurants in Athens
Diporto
No sign, no menu basement by the market: chickpea soup, fava, grilled fish and barrel wine. Lunch only, most Athenian meal here.
Ta Karamanlidika tou Fani
Deli taverna for Cappadocian cured meats, aged cheeses and sahanaki eggs. The lunch to build a market morning around.
Seychelles
A neighbourhood taverna reimagined: daily changing Greek dishes, offal and slow cooking that locals cross the city for.
Klimataria
Trading since 1927 under the vines: slow lamb, stuffed peppers, house wine and rebetiko musicians in the room.
Pharaoh
Wood fire new Greek cooking, natural wine and vinyl. Sharing plates of vegetables, offal and grilled meats, great value.
Akra
A chef's counter kitchen rewriting its menu daily around the market. The one modern Greek dinner to book, great value.
Ama Lachei sti Nefeli
Meze in a former schoolyard garden: dozens of small plates and long lunches that become evenings. Great for groups.
Atlantikos
Tiny alley taverna doing the city's best value fish: grilled sardines, fried anchovies and seafood pasta, pavement tables.
Outdoor things to do in Athens
Temple of Poseidon
Marble temple on the cliff at Attica's tip, timed for sunset over the Aegean, with a swim and fish lunch en route.
Archaeological Site of Delphi
Apollo's sanctuary on Parnassus with theatre, stadium and a superb museum. The best full day ancient trip.
Hydra
Car free island day by fast ferry: harbour swims, stone mansions and donkey path walks from Piraeus.
Agistri
Pine covered island under an hour from Piraeus by fast boat, with clear coves like Aponisos for a lazy swim day.
Aegina
The closest island to Athens, about 40 minutes by fast boat: the Temple of Aphaia, harbour fish tavernas and pistachios in Aegina town.
Lake Vouliagmeni
A warm, mineral, cliff ringed thermal lake you can swim in year round, with tiny fish and a cafe.
Archaeological Site of Mycenae
The Lion Gate and Treasury of Atreus, first stop on the long Peloponnese day with Epidaurus and Nafplio.
Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus
Near perfect acoustics: drop a coin on the stage and the back row hears it. Even better for a festival night.

Is Athens safe?
- Pickpocketing is the main visitor crime, at Monastiraki, Syntagma and Omonia interchanges and on crowded Line 1 trains.
- Keep phones off cafe table edges in Psyrri and Monastiraki at night, and bags off the backs of cafe chairs.
- Demonstrations centre on Syntagma and Exarchia and close streets for hours: walk around them, not through.
- Tap water in Athens is safe and good. Emergency number is 112.
- Check your government's current travel advice before you go.
Athens travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Plaka and Adrianou view restaurants with a tout and photo menu: you pay for the view in food quality. Eat in Koukaki, Psyrri or Pangrati.
- Three island in a day mega cruises to Hydra, Poros and Aegina: hours in transit for an hour ashore per island.
- Temple of Olympian Zeus as a standalone paid visit: the columns are visible from the fence and Hadrian's Arch.
- Lycabettus funicular queues at sunset: walking up or a taxi is faster, and Philopappos gives the better Acropolis view free.
- Unmetered fixed price taxi offers and reseller fast track Acropolis tickets at multiples of the official price.
Getting around Athens: public transport and more
- Walk the core: Acropolis, Plaka, Monastiraki, Syntagma and Kolonaki sit in a 20 minute radius.
- Metro Line 3 runs direct from the airport to Syntagma and Monastiraki in about 40 minutes.
- The tram runs from Syntagma to the coast at Pikrodafni, where you change for Glyfada and Voula. Allow about an hour; the seafront stretch is the scenic part.
- Use the FreeNow or Uber app for taxis, which dispatch licensed taxis at a logged, priced fare.
- Ferries: Piraeus for most islands, Rafina for Andros, Tinos and Mykonos, Lavrio for Kea and Kythnos.
