Things to do in Lefkada
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Lefkada
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Green season, wildflowers and full waterfalls, hiking perfection, low prices, some beach businesses still closed in April.
Best month with September, warm sea, long days, everything open, no August crowds and mid prices.
Full summer, hot and busy, west beaches magnificent and crowded by midday, book everything.
Peak prices and crowds, full festival calendar, Assumption on 15 August is a national peak within peak.
Other best month, sea at its warmest, crowds gone after first week, prices falling, first storms late in month.
Shoulder closing down, swimming possible to mid October, hiking excellent, many hotels and cruises shut through the month.
Winter, rain and green hills, empty beaches, only Lefkada Town has real life, not a beach holiday.

Where to stay in Lefkada

Agios Nikitas
beach village base, couples
Pedestrian lane of tavernas and small hotels down to a village beach, with Mylos and Kathisma close by.
Nidri
easiest and liveliest base, no car
Harbour strip of restaurants, trip boats and rentals, calm swimming, Meganisi ferry and waterfalls behind town.

Quieter east coast strip holding most large luxury hotels, calm water and easy parking, a car needed for evenings.
Vasiliki
windsurf base, south coast
Working harbour village around a huge bay, with the Ponti windsurf strip and Agiofili nearby.
Sivota and Mikros Gialos
quiet pretty harbour base, repeat visitors
Beautiful bay, excellent tavernas and villa stock, calm swimming nearby, a car essential and west beaches far.
Think twice about
- Nidri main strip
Not dangerous, but the noisiest, most tout heavy and generic stretch, with late bar noise in August. Base in Perigiali, Geni, Nikiana or Sivota instead.
- Lefkada Town marina and harbour road
Traffic choked at evening peak and functional rather than charming around the bus station. Stay in the old quarter lanes instead.
- Isolated west-coast beach roads after dark
Unlit winding roads with wandering goats and occasional rockfall. The risk is driving, so slow down and do not drive tired or after wine.

Is Lefkada safe?
- Emergency number is 112, Lefkada Town has a general hospital and pharmacies run a night and Sunday rota.
- The sea is the main risk: west beaches have deep water, waves and currents, and lifeguards only on organised sections in season.
- West beaches have minimal shade and interior trails have no water, carry hats and 2 litres per person for walks.
- Scooters suit confident riders only, west coast roads are steep and gravelly at the edges.
Lefkada travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Nidri main strip touts and picture menus: use named picks for dinner and never follow a best seafood pitch unchecked.
- Fish by the kilo everywhere: always confirm the per kilo price and the fish weight before cooking.
- Porto Katsiki at 1pm in August is hot and crowded with no shade, timing is the whole product.
- Skorpios is a private island, boats sail past and swim nearby but nobody lands, any landing ticket is mis-selling.
- Sunbed front row sets at Kathisma and Porto Katsiki can reach resort prices in August, ask before you sit.
Getting around Lefkada: public transport and more
- Fly to Aktion Preveza, about 20 minutes from Lefkada Town across the causeway, or drive from Athens in about 4 to 4.5 hours.
- You need a car or a plan: the best beaches are 20 to 50 minutes from any base on winding roads and buses thin out outside summer.
- Book a small rental car early for July and August, photograph it on pickup and check fuel and excess terms.
- West beach parking charges about 5 to 10 euros a day in season and lots fill by late morning in August, so arrive early or go late.
