Things to do in Chania
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Chania
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Spring, late March to May: warm, wildflowers in the gorges, Samaria typically opens in May, shoulder prices and crowds.
Summer, June to early September: hot, sea at its best, everything open, August fullest and priciest, meltemi can disrupt boats and north-coast beaches.
Autumn, mid-September to October: locals' favourite, warmest sea, harvest and raki distilling, seasonal tavernas close through October.
Winter, November to early March: mild and rainy, beach businesses shut and Samaria closed, but the living Old Town, museums and year-round tavernas are residents' Chania.

Best things to do in Chania

Where to stay in Chania
Old Town
first trip, all-round base
Everything in the Old Town on foot, the densest restaurant map in western Crete, and the KTEL station a 10 minute walk away.
Halepa
elegant, quiet base for repeat visitors
Grand 19th-century consular houses, sea views and Tabakaria tavernas, a 20 minute harbour walk from the Old Town.
Nea Chora
city plus beach on foot, best value
A long sandy town beach and locals' fish tavernas 10 to 15 minutes on foot from the harbour, without resort prices.
Agioi Apostoloi / Kato Daratso
family beach base near the city
Two calm sandy coves 4 km west of town with larger hotels and easy buses into Chania for dinner.
Akrotiri / Stavros
quiet base with a car
Stavros and Marathi beaches, Seitan Limania and the monasteries on your doorstep, with space, parking and silence.
Kalyves / Almyrida
longer, slower village stay
Low-key Blue Flag beach villages under the White Mountains, excellent for a week or more with a car.
Think twice about
- Akti Kountourioti harbour front, first row
Restaurant music, bar noise and crowds past midnight, plus the city's highest prices for often small rooms. Sleep one street back.
- Souda port area
A working ferry and naval port with no Old Town, no beach worth the name and no evening life to walk to.
- Platanias main road strip, second and third rows
Main-road noise with no beach and no village gives you neither a resort nor a city. Choose beachfront or a quiet side street.
- Properties sold as Chania in Maleme, Gerani, Kissamos town or the airport corridor
Without a car these strand you with no walkable dinner, beach or old town, and taxi costs erase the saving.

Is Chania safe?
- Very safe by European standards; the real risks are petty theft in harbour and market crowds.
- Carry water and a hat and start mornings early on Samaria, Seitan Limania and Aptera; wear real shoes on steep beach paths.
- Respect meltemi sea conditions and flags, and postpone boat trips in rough weather.
- Drive Theriso and Elafonissi mountain roads sober, unhurried and in daylight.
Chania travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Harbour-front restaurants with touts and photo menus; agree a whole fish price before cooking, everywhere.
- Unlicensed harbour guides; licensed guides carry official GNTO ID, so book via an established office or reviewed platform.
- Fake authentic Cretan oil and honey in harbour shops; buy at the Saturday market, a cooperative or a named producer.
- Elafonissi and Balos at midday in August, and swapping western Crete for a long hot day at Knossos.
Getting around Chania: public transport and more
- Walk the Old Town; it is compact and largely pedestrianised, and a car is a liability inside the walls.
- KTEL buses are cheap and air-conditioned: airport about 2.50 EUR, Rethymno about 7 EUR, Heraklion about 18 EUR, plus seasonal beach and gorge services.
- Rent a car only for gorge and beach days from a reputable local firm, photograph it, confirm full insurance and check forbidden roads.
- Park in signed lots outside the walls; many rental contracts exclude the Balos dirt road.
