Meteora travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- The Athens day trip spends 8 to 9 hours in transit for about 4 hours at Meteora.
- Trying to enter all six monasteries in one day ignores different closing days and early closing.
- Monastery car parks peak 10:00 to 15:00 with day tours. Go at opening or after 15:00.
- Main road tour group restaurants in Kalambaka charge view prices for mediocre food.
- Sunset decks are unfenced rock above sheer drops and the road down is dark and winding.
Getting around Meteora: public transport and more
- Trains from Athens need a rail replacement bus for the Palaiofarsalos to Kalambaka leg.
- No airport serves Meteora. Thessaloniki, Ioannina and Athens are 2.5 hours or more by road.
- A car is most flexible. Without one use the local KTEL bus, taxis agreed in advance, tours or trails.
- Kalambaka to Kastraki is 2 km, about 25 minutes in daylight, unlit in stretches at night.
- Carry small euros in cash for monastery entry at 5 euros per house.
