Things to do in Tezpur
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Tezpur
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best window: cool and dry, Nameri and Orang open, peak birding in January and February, tea gardens greenest.
Workable and warmer, with Rongali Bihu in mid April, balanced against heat and pre monsoon Bordoisila storms.
Parks reopen and Durga Puja fills the temples, with quiet lamp lit Kati Bihu in mid October.
Avoid for this itinerary: heat, then monsoon floods, closed parks, no rafting and landslide prone hill roads.
What's on
- Magh Bihu mid January
Harvest festival of feasts and meji bonfires, the most atmospheric week in an Assamese town.
- Maha Shivratri February to March, date varies
Mahabhairav Temple fills with devotees for Shiva's great night.
- Rongali Bihu (Bohag Bihu) mid April
Assamese New Year, the state's great festival of dance, music, gamusa giving and pitha.
- Kati Bihu mid October
The quiet, lamp lit Bihu, subtle rather than spectacular.
- Durga Puja September to October, dates vary
Tezpur's temples and pandals fill, with Bhairabi Temple at its most fervent.
Best things to do in Tezpur
Agnigarh Hill
Tezpur's legend hill above the Brahmaputra, climbed for the town's best sunset view over the river and bridge.
Chitralekha Udyan
The old Cole Park, a lake garden that doubles as an open air museum of early sculpture and the Bhomoraguri inscription.
Mahabhairav Temple
Tezpur's main living Shiva temple on a northern hillock, serene on normal days and packed at Shivratri.
Da-Parbatia
Assam's oldest temple art, a 5th to 6th century carved doorframe with Ganga and Yamuna, under continuous worship since.
Bamuni Hills
Fallen 9th to 10th century temple carvings scattered in woodland, an atmospheric ruin field for people who like ruins.
Bhairabi Temple
A revered Shakti siddha pitha by the Brahmaputra near the bridge, at its most fervent during Durga Puja.
Ketakeshwar Dewal
A quiet neighbourhood Shiva temple with a sacred pond, home in local tradition to one of Assam's largest lingams.
District Museum, Tezpur
A small museum of manuscripts and sculpture that gives the town's ruins their names, dates and context.
Where to stay in Tezpur
Central Tezpur (Mahabhairab)
first night, heritage town, no car
Walkable to the park, tanks, temples and bazaar restaurants, with autos for Agnigarh and the ghats.
Highway edge (Mission Chariali and Dekargaon)
transit night with own driver
Newer, larger hotels with parking and facilities, but every outing needs a vehicle and the walk out is a highway.
Balipara
splurge, tea gardens, Nameri head start
One outstanding heritage tea bungalow in green quiet, about 20 km from Nameri, where you dine where you sleep.
Potasali, Nameri
birders and trekkers
Simple eco camp rooms at the park gate, so dawn walks and rafting start without a transfer.
Think twice about
- Mission Chariali and Dekargaon highway strip as a walking base
Loud, dusty national highway built for trucks. Every outing needs a vehicle and the evening walk is a highway shoulder. Stay in the town centre grid instead.
- Low lying riverbank and char areas in the monsoon
The Brahmaputra floods its banks and chars from June to September, cutting roads toward Nameri and Bhalukpong. A season risk, not a neighbourhood risk.
