Things to do in Tawang
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Tawang
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Spring to early summer is the main best window, pleasant and green, with roads most reliably open.
Monsoon brings heavy rain, landslide and closure risk, and views lost to cloud for days.
Autumn offers post monsoon clarity and the best mountain views, with properly cold nights from November.
Winter brings snow, sub zero nights and pass closures, offset by Torgya in January and Losar in February to March.
What's on
- Torgya 10 to 12 January
Three days of masked monk dances in the Tawang Monastery courtyard to ward off evil for the year.
- Losar February or March
Tibetan and Monpa New Year, with monastery ceremonies, feasting, prayer flags and processions across town.
- Saka Dawa May or June, full moon
Devotional observance of the Buddha's birth, enlightenment and death, marked across Tawang's monasteries.
- Lhabab Duchen October or November
A quieter monastery observance honouring the Buddha's descent from heaven, with chanting and offerings.

- Jang as a base
Not unsafe, just 36 to 40 km from Tawang, so every sight becomes a commute and Tawang evenings are lost.
- Sela Pass area
No lodging and Army controlled at 13,700 feet. It is a photo and tea stop, never a place to stay or camp.

Is Tawang safe?
- Altitude leads: town is about 3,000 m, Sela about 4,170 m and Bum La about 4,600 m, so stage via Dirang and rest first.
- Take headache, nausea or breathlessness seriously, stop ascending, and descend toward Dirang if symptoms worsen.
- Do not photograph military installations where told not to, and leave drones at home in this border district.
Tawang travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- The one night Tawang itinerary, which pairs two brutal road days with an unacclimatised Bum La attempt.
- The 45 minute package tour monastery stop. Insist on two hours or return independently the same day.
- Imported jackets and machine made thangkas in the bazaars, dearer and worse than Craft Centre work.
Getting around Tawang: public transport and more
- Stage the road in via Dirang or Bomdila, then cross the Sela by pass road or the Sela Tunnel, opened in March 2024.
- Shared Sumos run early morning inter town legs and do not stop for sights, so hire a car by the day for sightseeing.
- Use a Tawang local SUV for the Bum La day, whatever car brought you from Assam.
- Build one buffer day for snow, landslide or Army closures, and two in winter or monsoon.
