Best time to visit Srinagar & Kashmir
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Chillai Kalan deep winter to about 31 January, then peak Gulmarg ski season; Dal Lake can partly freeze and houseboats need confirmed heating.

Classic summer begins, meadows green, all roads open, and the busiest, priciest domestic season in Srinagar and the excursion towns.
Warm in Srinagar, cool in the valleys, but the Amarnath Yatra takes over Pahalgam and the Baltal route with pilgrim traffic and controls.
Harvest and chinar colour, thinning crowds, famous October light; the best all round window for many repeat visitors.
Saffron bloom at Pampore ends in early to mid November, temperatures fall, and houseboat heating must be confirmed in writing.
Snow season starts, Srinagar rates fall and Gulmarg rates peak; Chillai Kalan begins around 21 December.

Is Srinagar & Kashmir safe?
- Terrorism and civil unrest are live risks in the Valley: expect checkpoints, closures at short notice and periodic internet restrictions.
- Authorities closed roughly 48 to 50 destinations after the April 2025 attack and reopenings have been phased; confirm each pick is open before travelling.
- Foreign guests are reported by every hotel and houseboat on Form C; carry passport and visa copies at all checkpoints.
- Never photograph military convoys, checkpoints or installations, do not use a satellite phone, and expect short notice shutdowns and internet cuts.
- Public alcohol consumption is prohibited and Kashmir is largely dry in practice for visitors; plan a no alcohol trip.
Srinagar & Kashmir travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Never accept an unnamed houseboat allocated on arrival; book a named, reviewed boat with meals and heating in writing.
- Agree shikara route, duration and price before stepping in, and decline floating shop detours politely.
- Suspiciously cheap saffron is a famous fraud; buy in Pampore from established sellers and pay a proper price.
- Do not argue the union taxi system at the barrier; budget for it and agree included points before starting.
Getting around Srinagar & Kashmir: public transport and more
- Fly into Srinagar airport (SXR), a defence airfield with extra screening, rather than relying on the long Jammu highway.
- Travel by private car with driver booked by the day; there is no useful visitor public transport.
- At Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg, local union taxis and ponies are mandatory for local sightseeing; your Srinagar car waits.
- Prepaid SIMs from outside Jammu and Kashmir do not work here; postpaid does, or buy a local tourist SIM on arrival.
