Things to do in Silchar
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Silchar
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best months, post monsoon and comfortable, with the Bhuban climb, winter Son Beel and the Haflong train at their best.
Gandhi Mela runs in Gandhi Bagh in January, a fair of handmade goods and woven textiles.
Shoulder months. October can still be wet but brings Durga Puja and Jatinga season, March brings rising heat.
Worst for leisure, with pre monsoon storms from May and core monsoon floods, waterlogging and landslide risk to September.
What's on
- Durga Puja October, main days vary by lunar calendar
The Barak Valley's biggest festival, with more than 300 pandals reported in Silchar and full hotels.
- Bhasha Shahid Dibas 19 May
Language Martyrs' Day, commemorating the eleven killed on 19 May 1961 for Bengali's place in the valley.
- Maha Shivratri at Bhuban February or March, lunar
Thousands of devotees climb Bhuban Hill and the Bhuban Mela runs with the pilgrimage.
- Gandhi Mela January
The Gandhi Bagh fair of handmade goods and woven textiles, the gentle winter event.
- Jatinga bird season Late August to early November, peak mid September to mid October
Disoriented birds descend at Jatinga near Haflong on foggy moonless evenings, to watch and never to handle.
Best things to do in Silchar
Kachari Fort
The ruined gates and temples of the Dimasa capital at Khaspur, the physical proof of the valley's court history.
Sri Kancha Kanti Devi Mandir
The valley's most revered goddess temple at Udharbond, royal deity of the Kachari kings and Silchar's best reviewed sight.
Gandhi Bagh Park
Silchar's central green by its lake, the morning walk and family park that anchors the Park Road side of town.
Shahid Minar
The memorial in Gandhi Bagh to the eleven language martyrs of 19 May 1961, the key to understanding Bengali Silchar.
ISKCON Temple Silchar
A beautifully kept Krishna temple with a calm atmosphere, the gentlest temple stop in the city for an evening aarti.
Maniharan Tunnel
A tunnel wrapped in Krishna legend and ringed by small temples, worth a stop on the Bhuban circuit and not alone.
Badarpur Fort
Ruined riverside fort walls on the Barak near Badarpur, an atmospheric half day for history completists only.
Sadarghat Bridge
Silchar's only Barak bridge in the city and its best free viewpoint, made for sunset over the wide river.
Where to stay in Silchar
Club Road and the old centre
character, walking to dinner, the polo club story
The historic core where the Cachar Club sits, closest to bazaars, Hasty Tasty, Blue Orchid and Sadarghat.
Park Road and Ambikapatty
first leisure visit, families, morning walks
A calmer central area by Gandhi Bagh Park and the lake, with the city's most amenity complete hotel.
Tarapur and Rangirkhari
transit nights, early trains and flights, value
The station and airport road side, with the best evidenced mid range and budget hotels in the city.
Think twice about
- Low lying wards in monsoon, including Rangirkhari, Ambikapatty, Shillong Patty, Bilpar, Ashram Road, Hailakandi Road and Saratpally
These wards were named in recent urban flooding reporting. In wet months avoid ground floor rooms there and take an upper floor.
- Low riverside lodging near the Barak at Sadarghat in flood season
The Barak flooded most of Silchar in June 2022. Riverside stays are a dry season choice, not a monsoon one.
- Janiganj bazaar core for sleeping
Noise and congestion in bazaar hours make it a place to walk and eat, not the calmest place to sleep.

|---|---|
| Classic | ₹4,000 a person |

A day of food, drink, sights and getting around, before the room
What to book ahead
- Haflong Lake: a few days ahead
- New Haflong Railway Station: a few days ahead
- Hotel Cachar Club: weeks ahead
- Borail View Regency: weeks ahead
- Book the Cachar Club and Borail View weeks ahead for Durga Puja, when returning families fill the good rooms.
- Book the Haflong hill train on IRCTC early for October to February weekends and any Vistadome service.
- Book hotel and car early and start at dawn if you time a trip for Shivratri and the Bhuban Mela climb.
- Leave a buffer night before any onward connection, because Silchar's flight schedule is thin.
Is Silchar safe?
- Never wade or drive through flooded Silchar streets, because open drains and live hazards hide under the water.
- Check hill road and hill railway running status in monsoon, when landslide disruption is a seasonal risk.
- Use repellent and covered evenings, and carry water on the Bhuban climb, which is a dawn activity in heat.
- Emergency number in India is 112, and Silchar is the medical hub of the Barak Valley.
Silchar travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Haflong sold as a day trip is the main trap, at over three hours each way by the fastest train.
- Do not pay for a packaged Silchar tea estate tour unless you can confirm it with the estate directly.
- Check the rupee price on Indian booking channels, as some overseas sites quote the same Silchar rooms far higher.
- Goldighi Mall is a useful mall in rain, not a sight, whatever the attraction lists say.
Getting around Silchar: public transport and more
- Silchar Airport at Kumbhirgram is about 23 to 30 km from town across Sadarghat Bridge, so allow 45 minutes to an hour.
- Use auto rickshaws and e rickshaws in town and a hired car with an agreed day rate for Khaspur, Kancha Kanti and Bhuban.
- Trains to New Haflong run a few times a day and take over three hours, so Haflong is an overnight, not a day trip.
- Bengali gets you everywhere in the valley, Hindi works widely, and English thins out beyond hotels and institutions.
