Things to do in Redang Island
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Redang Island
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Season opens around 1 March: lowest in season prices and quiet beaches, with early seas still unreliable.
Peak season: calmest seas, best visibility, full schedules, turtle nesting peak May to July, holiday price spikes.
Closing shoulder: low season prices and thin crowds, less reliable weather, some resorts close in mid October.
Closed for the northeast monsoon: most resorts shut, ferries stop, and the island is not a practical trip.
What's on
- Green turtle nesting peak at Chagar Hutang May to July peak, within a roughly March to September season
The sanctuary beach is closed to the public; in water turtle encounters around Redang peak in this window.
- Hari Raya Aidilfitri Around 10 March in 2027, shifts earlier each year
Malaysia's biggest homecoming holiday near the season opening; packages and boats fill and prices spike.

Where to stay in Redang Island
Pasir Panjang (Long Beach)
first trip, choice across tiers

Teluk Dalam
quiet and luxury

Teluk Kalong
small resorts, calmer sand

Think twice about
- Chagar Hutang and the Mak Simpan and Mak Kepit sanctuary beaches
Gazetted turtle sanctuaries closed to the public, with no resorts and boat only access. There is nothing to book there.
- The village by the main jetty as a beach base
A working residential settlement, not a resort beach; its few rooms serve transit more than holidays.
- Kuala Terengganu as a Redang base in peak season
Day boats lose the quiet house reef hours and all weather flexibility, and the crossing is paid twice a day in time.

Redang Island travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Planning Redang from November to February, when resorts shut and ferries stop and the island effectively closes.
- Comparing Redang package prices with Perhentian room rates without counting the bundled transfers and all meals.
- Paying for a landing at Chagar Hutang; the sanctuary beach is closed to the public and no operator can sell it.
Getting around Redang Island: public transport and more
- Cross from Merang jetty in about 45 minutes; public boats in season at about 8:00, 9:30, 10:30, 13:00 and 15:00, one way about MYR 55 to 65.
- The Kuala Terengganu departure point has moved since Shahbandar jetty was damaged; follow the jetty named in your resort confirmation, not an old guide.
- Pay the marine park fee at the jetty or in the package: MYR 5 Malaysian adult, MYR 30 non Malaysian adult. There is no ATM on the island.
