Things to do in Ranikhet
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Ranikhet
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Peak and best all round, with Chaubatia blossom in April to May and the clearest pre monsoon views.
Monsoon brings lush orchards and forests but mist, leeches and landslide risk on approach roads.
Post monsoon skies give the sharpest Himalayan panoramas of the year, best in late October.
Cold and quiet with occasional snow at Chaubatia and Majhkhali in late December and January.
What's on
- Nanda Devi Fair August to September, peak around September
The great Kumaon goddess fair at Almora and across the region, with processions and folk performance.
- Syalde Bikhauti Mela mid April
The historic Bikhauti fair at Dwarahat drawing villages from across the valley for folk performance and trade.
- Harela July to August
The Kumaoni sowing festival of grain, saplings and folk songs marking the monsoon arrival.
- Ramlila October, through the Dussehra period
Nightly local Ramlila performances of the Ramayana on town grounds in Ranikhet and Almora.

Majhkhali
groups, families and sunset views
Resort plots on the Kausani road with sunset skies, but every town trip needs a hired car.
Sadar Bazaar / bus stand
budget and transit nights
Cheapest rooms and most restaurants, at the cost of horns, buses and early bazaar noise.
Think twice about
- Sadar Bazaar bus stand perimeter as a sleep base
Not a safety problem. Horns, idling buses and early shop starts make it the wrong base for a peaceful stay.
- Majhkhali and the Almora highway without a car
Quiet and scenic but isolated after dark, with every meal and sight a taxi negotiation away.

Is Ranikhet safe?
- There is no dangerous base area in this Army cantonment town, and no tout or pickpocket pattern in the sources.
- Avoid unlit forest road walks after dark because of monkeys by day and a genuine leopard presence in these forests.
- In monsoon, landslides can close the Kathgodam and Almora roads, so keep a buffer day before onward travel.
- In winter, ice on shaded bends makes very early road starts unwise.
Ranikhet travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Chaubatia outside blossom and fruit season is a pleasant forest slope, not a laden orchard.
- Bhalu Dam alone is small and often low on water, so sell the trek, not the dam.
- Uphat is a historic natural turf 9 hole course, not a championship golf product.
- A bazaar Kumaoni thali priced like a metro tasting menu is priced for tourists, not for the food.
Getting around Ranikhet: public transport and more
- The nearest railhead is Kathgodam, about 75 to 90 km away, then 2.5 to 3.5 hours by taxi on hill roads.
- Hire a car by the day and agree the Chaubatia, Jhula Devi, Uphat and Majhkhali loop in advance.
- Carry cash and offline maps, because ATMs are limited and signal thins around Chaubatia and Bhalu Dam.
- Plan road arrivals before dark, especially in winter when evening falls before 6pm.
