Things to do in Pondicherry
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Pondicherry
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best: late November to February, 20 to 30C, the only genuinely pleasant walking weather, with calm seas and festivals.
March shoulder: warms steadily, still workable with dawn scheduling, better hotel availability and often good diving seas.
October gamble: northeast monsoon arrives, prices soften and crowds thin, with cyclone risk and a need for indoor fallbacks.
Southwest monsoon: hot and humid with sharp showers, lush and cheaper, but diving is often cancelled in rough spells.
Worst for sightseeing: April to early June, routinely 36 to 41C with high humidity, sightseeing only before 9am and after 5pm.
Northeast monsoon context: mid October to mid November is wettest, while late November to December is usually pleasant.

Where to stay in Pondicherry
White Town
best overall base, first trip
Everything central is walkable, the sea is two minutes away, and an evening stroll to dinner is the natural plan.
Tamil Quarter
local life, food and value
Bigger houses, real markets and better value per rupee, a 10 to 15 minute walk from the Promenade.
Auroville / Kuilapalayam
slow stays and Auroville first trips
Forest guesthouses and the region's best cafes on your doorstep, but 12km from White Town and dark roads at night.
Serenity Beach / Kottakuppam
surfers and beach mornings
A fishing village surf strip 8km north: wake, surf, cafe, repeat, but every town sight is a ride away.
Chunnambar / Paradise Beach corridor
resort add on, split stay second half
Pool and backwater resorts south of town suit families, but as a first trip base you commute past everything.
Think twice about
- Around the main bus stand, 100 Feet Road and the Indira Nagar / Saram corridor
Pondy's modern commercial spine: multi lane traffic, exhaust and a 20 to 30 minute fight to reach White Town each outing.
- MG Road / Jawaharlal Nehru Street frontage
The shopping main drag is gridlocked and horn loud all day, with the town's most consistent hotel noise complaints.
- Isolated ECR highway properties north toward Kalapet
Nothing walkable around them, unlit highway frontage, and every meal and sight becomes a negotiated auto ride.

Is Pondicherry safe?
- The sea is the top risk: strong currents and a steep shelf at every beach, every month.
- Scooter accidents are the top visitor injury. Do not ride back from Auroville at night, arrange a car.
- Heat is a safety issue April to June: dawn and dusk scheduling is a safety practice, not a preference.
- Pondicherry is comparatively safe, including for solo women, with White Town walkable until around 11pm.
Pondicherry travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Swimming at Rock Beach: rocky, rough and not a swimming beach. Swim at Eden, Paradise or a pool.
- Auroville viewing point only visits: a long hot walk for a distant photograph. Book the Inner Chamber or add Svaram.
- Paradise Beach add on packages: buy the boat and enjoy the sand, skip the ATV and jet ski upsell.
- White Town at noon for photos: the same streets at 7am are empty, cool and beautiful.
Getting around Pondicherry: public transport and more
- Walk White Town and cycle everywhere else. Bicycle and scooter hire are widespread.
- Agree auto rickshaw fares before moving, or let your hotel fix a price. App cabs are thinner than in Chennai.
- Chennai is the gateway: about 150km and 3 to 3.5 hours by the East Coast Road, best in daylight.
