Things to do in Patna
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Patna
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
The season: days around 22 to 29 degrees, festivals at full stretch and the Buddhist circuit at its best, with fog, peak prices and poor air on still days.
Very good shoulder: post monsoon green, heat easing, Durga Puja energy and Patna at its most photogenic.
Good but heating up, with Holi crowds; sightsee early and late.
The worst months: May and June regularly exceed 40 degrees with hot winds, dust and heat illness risk. Avoid.
Monsoon: heavy rain, waterlogged low streets, a swollen Ganga suspending boats and cruises, and disrupted road trips.

Where to stay in Patna
Gandhi Maidan - Fraser Road - Exhibition Road
first trip, all-round base
The centre of gravity, with the maidan, Golghar, the museum quarter nearby and the best concentration of hotels.
Buddh Marg - Lodipur
sights end of the centre, luxury base
Marginally calmer than Exhibition Road, walkable to Patna Museum and Golghar, and home to the Taj.
Boring Road - Patliputra Colony - Bailey Road
quieter, residential, family stays
Tree lined colony streets, cafes and the zoo on Bailey Road, with calmer nights but a thinner hotel stock.
Think twice about
- Patna Junction perimeter
A permanent jam of autos, buses and temple queues with touts, pickpocketing risk, open drains and the city's noisiest nights. Use it for trains, do not sleep in it.
- Patna City old quarter
Wonderful to visit for the gurudwara, impractical as a base: lanes too narrow for cars, severe congestion, drainage that floods first and almost no hotel stock above basic.
- Low-lying Kankarbagh and Rajendra Nagar edges in monsoon
Ordinary residential districts whose low streets have taken Patna's worst waterlogging, staying under water for days in a bad monsoon week.

A day of food, drink, sights and getting around, before the room
What to book ahead
- Patna Golf Club: a few days ahead
- MV Ganga Vihar Floating Restaurant: a few days ahead
- Rajgir Nature Safari: a few days ahead
- Taj City Centre Patna: weeks ahead
- Gandhali: a few days ahead
- Pind Balluchi: a few days ahead
- Around Chhath and Diwali, book trains the day the window opens and central hotels weeks ahead.
- Book Rajgir Nature Safari tickets online in advance and take the earliest slot; the Rajgir ropeway is walk up and cash based.
- Bodh Gaya fills in December and January, so book winter overnights there ahead.
- Most Patna museums and several parks close on Mondays, so make Monday the day trip or travel day.
- Confirm the current Ganga Vihar sailing before planning an evening around it, as the schedule is limited and changeable.
Is Patna safe?
- Bihar has banned alcohol sale and consumption since 2016; do not buy, carry or ask a driver to find it, and never touch illicit liquor.
- Winter air quality is often poor to very unhealthy; carry asthma medication, mask on bad mornings and favour parks and the riverfront early.
- Drink bottled or filtered water only, choose high turnover street stalls, and carry rehydration salts in the hot months.
- In dense crowds at ghats, fairs, temples and the station, keep phones and wallets in front pockets or a cross body bag. Emergency number is 112.
Patna travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- The one day Rajgir plus Nalanda plus Bodh Gaya package means seven plus hours of driving and the worst hour at each site.
- Imitation Champaran houses are everywhere; the queue and a sealed handi opened in front of you are the authenticity tests.
- Golghar at midday is a misery that dawn and dusk turn into a pleasure; timing is the whole game in Patna.
- Refuse station touts and unlicensed gate guides; use hotel arranged drivers and authorised guides hired at the ticket window.
Getting around Patna: public transport and more
- Walk inside Gandhi Maidan, the parks and museum campuses; ride everything else, as heat, traffic and broken footpaths defeat point to point walking.
- App cabs on Ola and Uber are the default; for autos and e-rickshaws agree the fare before boarding and keep small notes.
- Hire a car and driver by the day for Patna City, Kumhrar and all day trips, confirm the total in writing and start early.
- Rajendra Nagar Terminal is the calmer rail arrival when your train offers it; trains sell out around Diwali and Chhath, and the 60 day booking window is a real deadline.
- Vaishali and Sonepur are north of the Ganga, and bridge traffic is heavy at peak hours, so north bank trips need the earliest start.
