Things to do in Naxos
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Naxos
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Winter: Chora and villages live, most visitor businesses close, seas rough and swimming for the hardy.
Spring: wildflowers, green terraces and Zas at its finest, with May the best month for the interior.
Early summer sweet spot: warm sea, everything open, village festivals begin and August crush absent.
Peak: hottest, busiest, priciest and windiest, with meltemi at full force and Zas only at dawn or sunset.
Autumn: warmest sea, fading meltemi, harvests and falling prices, with October progressively closing.

Where to stay in Naxos
Chora and Agios Georgios
first trip, all round base
Port, bus hub, restaurants and old town in one walkable place, with Agios Georgios beach a short flat walk south.
Agios Prokopios to Agia Anna
pure beach, families and couples
One continuous sandy arc with everything in the village and frequent buses to Chora, but a purpose built resort strip.
Plaka and Maragas
space, quiet and sunset swims
Low scattered hotels behind dunes on the most spacious beach, quiet at night and best with a car or the bus.
Mikri Vigla and Kastraki
wind sports
Small, scattered and beautiful, base here only if kite or windsurf is the trip and you have a car.
Interior: Halki, Filoti and Apeiranthos
authenticity and hiking
Stone villages, trailheads and tavernas full of locals, with no beach and a car essential for a split stay.
Think twice about
- Chora harbour front road (Paralia)
Not unsafe, but ferry announcements, bar music and scooters run past midnight and front rooms take it all.
- Apollonas and Moutsouna as a sole base
Lovely villages but 1 to 1.5 hours of mountain road from Chora, with few winter services and no practical bus frequency.
- Isolated villas near Plaka or Mikri Vigla without a car
Some listings stretch near and sit down unlit tracks, so the walk back from a taverna becomes a strand risk.
- Agios Prokopios main strip front rooms in August
Beach club music and strip traffic spoil quiet, while the same village two streets back is fine.

Is Naxos safe?
- Naxos is low crime, so watch bags on ferries and lock rental cars, and confirm sunbed and taxi prices first.
- Sun, heat and meltemi wind are the real risks: carry water and a hat for Delos, Zas and the kouros sites.
- Drive mountain roads slowly at night for goats and hairpins, and swim the west coast on windy days.
Naxos travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Port front Chora tavernas with photo menus and greeters charge a view premium for ordinary food.
- Front row sunbeds at Agios Prokopios and Agia Anna in August can reach premium prices with minimum spends, so ask first.
- A paid sunset at the Portara tour is selling air: it is free and a five minute walk from the port.
- Generic local products shops on the port charge multiples of deli and village prices, some for stock that is not Naxian.
Getting around Naxos: public transport and more
- KTEL buses from Chora cover the west coast and main villages well in season, and frequencies collapse outside June to September.
- Hire a small car for 2 to 3 days to unlock the interior, east coast and beach hopping, and fill up in Chora.
- Ferries link Piraeus in about 3 to 5.5 hours and Paros in about 45 minutes, and Athens flights take about 40 minutes.
