Things to do in Nantes
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Nantes
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Spring: camellias then magnolias, terraces reopen, a sweet spot from late April.
Best overall weather with September: roughly 15 to 25C, long light without peak crowds.
Summer Voyage festival, warmest and longest days, highest prices and some August restaurant closures.
September is arguably best: installations still up early on, Muscadet harvest, crowds gone; October cools and rains more.
The wettest, quietest and cheapest month: museums, food and bars, not excursions.
Cold, damp and short days, but the Christmas market and La Folle Journee are reasons to come.
What's on
- Hellfest mid-June
One of Europe biggest metal festivals in Clisson, flooding Nantes hotels and trains that weekend.
- Le Voyage à Nantes early July to late August
The summer festival refreshes the Green Line with major new installations and extended openings.
- Les Rendez-vous de l'Erdre late August
A free jazz festival on stages along the Erdre with a flotilla of heritage boats.
- Christmas Market 19 November to 27 December 2026
Western France largest winter market at Place Royale and Place du Commerce, best after dark.
- La Folle Journée late January to early February
A huge classical festival of hundreds of short, affordable concerts across the city over about five days.
Worth the trip for
Best things to do in Nantes

Where to stay in Nantes
Graslin - Commerce
first trip, all-round base
The elegant 18th century quarter with the opera, Passage and best hotels, quiet at night in the right way.
Bouffay - Decré - Cathédrale
food and nightlife on foot
Medieval lanes, the castle at your door and the densest restaurant and creperie choice in the city.
Île de Nantes
modern, spacious, value
Newer hotels with bigger rooms for the money, wide Loire quays and a short walk or tram to Bouffay.
Hauts-Pavés - Saint-Félix / Saint-Donatien
quiet, longer and local stays
Leafy residential streets around the Jardin des Plantes and the Erdre, calm in exchange for a short tram ride.
Madeleine - Champ-de-Mars
good value, check exact street
By Le Lieu Unique and the congress centre, handy for the station south side and events, on a main street.
Think twice about
- Bellevue
A large social housing district far from the centre, repeatedly named to avoid as a base, with no visitor reason to be there.
- Malakoff
Immediately southeast of the main station, with a rougher night feel and a walk back visitors report as uncomfortable.
- Around Commerce tram interchange late at night
Fine and crowded by day, but drug dealing and touting are noted at night: pass through, do not base or linger.
- Far west tip of Île de Nantes around Hangar à Bananes late at night
A legitimate nightlife destination, but the emptying quays feel sketchier late: go with a group and know your way back.

Is Nantes safe?
- The centre, Graslin, Bouffay, Saint-Donatien and central Ile de Nantes are busy and comfortable, including for solo women travellers.
- Watch for pickpockets around the station, crowded trams and Commerce at peak, and keep phones off cafe tables in Bouffay at night.
- Emergency number is 112, police 17, SAMU medical 15 and fire 18.
- Say bonjour before any request: shops and restaurants notice it, in a good way.
Nantes travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Skip the line and private highlights bundles are not worth it except for the Machines: queues elsewhere are short.
- Le Hangar a Bananes is dead by day: go at sunset or night, or just see the Anneaux rings lit on the quay.
- Do not plan around a full cathedral interior: fire restoration since 2020 means partial access.
- Do not give shopping half a day, and do not attempt Mont-Saint-Michel or Rennes as rushed day trips.
- Check August closure dates for any specific restaurant or small museum before building a trip around it.
Getting around Nantes: public transport and more
- Walk first: Graslin to Bouffay to the castle is 15 minutes end to end, and the Green Line is your wayfinding.
- Tram is the system, with three lines crossing at Commerce, and TAN network travel is free on Saturdays and Sundays.
- Use Bicloo city bikes and Navibus ferries, including N1 to Trentemoult, as transport rather than tours.
- TGV from Paris Montparnasse takes about two hours; the airport shuttle reaches the centre in about 20 minutes.
- Buy Pass Nantes if doing paid sights: it covers 50 plus attractions and transport, but book the Elephant ride separately.
