Where to go for Bastille Day
14 July
Paris
Paris holds the national military parade down the Champs-Elysees in the morning and fireworks at the Eiffel Tower at night, with fire station balls the evening before.
About $180 a person a day
- Avenue des Champs-Elysees
Watch the morning military parade run from the Arc de Triomphe to Place de la Concorde. Last year the parade ran from 10am to noon with access points opening at 7:30am, so arrive at opening for a front barrier spot.
- Champ de Mars
Stand on the lawns at the foot of the Eiffel Tower for the free evening concert and the fireworks at around 11pm. Last year the viewing zones opened at 5pm and were usually full by 8pm, and glass bottles, alcohol and large bags were banned, so pack plastic bottles only and arrive in the late afternoon.
- Esplanade du Trocadero
Watch the Eiffel Tower fireworks from across the Seine without joining the Champ de Mars crowds. Last year the fireworks went up at around 11pm, so arrive well before nightfall for a clear sightline.
- Caserne Sevigne
Dance at a fire station ball, a Paris signature, usually from around 9pm to 4am on 13 July and sometimes 14 July with a small entry charge. Recheck before travelling, since last year the balls were postponed because of heat.
Lyon
Lyon fires its fireworks from Fourviere hill above the two rivers, watched from Place Bellecour, the quays or a boat on the Saone.
About $180 a person a day
- Place Bellecour
Join the busiest fireworks crowd on the big square as the show lights Fourviere above the two rivers. The tourist office lists this square among the busiest spots, so arrive in the early evening for a good position.
- Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourviere
Look up at the basilica on Fourviere hill as the fireworks are launched from the hill and light it. Walk up in the daytime for the view over the rivers, then watch the show from the banks below.
- Les Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse
Eat at the central market at 102 Cours Lafayette, with oysters at Cellerier and Lyon dishes such as quenelles de brochet, andouillette and cervelle de canut at the market counters. Check the market hours for the day itself, since its normal Monday closure does not affect 14 July in 2027 or 2028.
- Jardin de la Grande Cote
Picnic early in the evening in this garden on the Croix-Rousse slopes, which the tourist office lists as a quieter fireworks spot than the riverbanks. Arrive for sunset, not at nightfall.
Marseille
Marseille centres the national day on the Vieux-Port, with a military ceremony and air show on the quays and fireworks over the harbour.
About $180 a person a day
- Vieux-Port
Stand on the Old Port quays for the military ceremony and parade, which last year began at 5pm on 14 July with an air show, a parachute display and bands closing with La Marseillaise. Recheck whether the fireworks fall on 13 or 14 July, since last year they were fired on 13 July at around 10:30pm for nearly 30 minutes.
- Jardin du Pharo
Watch the fireworks from this garden viewpoint above the port. Last year it opened from 6pm with entry capped at 5,000 people, so arrive well before opening if that system repeats, and do not plan to drive, since parking around the Old Port was prohibited.
- Basilica of Notre-Dame de la Garde
Climb to the basilica for a higher view over the Vieux-Port and the fireworks. Go in the daytime for the panorama, then descend to the quays for the evening ceremony.
- La Mariniere
Eat bouillabaisse and Marseille seafood on the Vieux-Port quays before the evening road closures. Book ahead for July peak season and walk or take public transport to the port.
Nice
Nice marks 14 July on the Promenade des Anglais, where the 2016 attack is remembered, so the day is as much solemn as festive; come for old town food, the castle hill view and a seafront evening.
About $180 a person a day
- Promenade des Anglais
Walk the seafront promenade in the evening, but check the City of Nice programme first and do not assume fireworks are on 14 July night. Older guides put fireworks on 13 July at around 10:30pm, and 14 July in Nice is also a remembrance day, so some events may be solemn rather than festive.
- Place Massena
Gather on the main square between the old town and the seafront for the evening celebration. Arrive hours before nightfall, since security barriers and road closures line the promenade on the celebration night.
- Colline du Chateau
Climb Castle Hill for a higher view over the Baie des Anges and the seafront. Go in the daytime for the panorama, then descend to the promenade for the evening.
- Chez Pipo
Eat socca at this long running spot by the port at 13 Rue Bavastro in the afternoon, then walk to the promenade for the evening, allowing time for security checks.
Carcassonne
Carcassonne sets its medieval Cite ablaze with one of the biggest fireworks shows in France, a tradition since 1898.
About $180 a person a day
- Cite de Carcassonne
Watch the medieval Cite fireworks, staged from the ramparts since 1898, with the walls and towers glowing red mid show and a finale across the 600 metre facade. Last year the free show ran from 10:30pm for more than 25 minutes and drew about 700,000 people, so be in town during the day, not arriving for the evening.
- Pont Vieux
Stand on the old bridge over the Aude for a prime view facing the Cite. The bridge spots fill from mid afternoon, so claim a place hours before the 10:30pm show.
- Pont Neuf
Watch from the newer bridge over the Aude for the classic postcard view of the Cite across the river. Arrive by mid afternoon, since the bridge spots fill early on the day.
- Chateau Comtal
Walk the castle and ramparts in the daytime before the evening crowds, and eat lunch inside the walls since the Cite terraces fill early. Check the castle hours for the day itself, and pair the visit with a free Festival de la Cite show in July.
Bordeaux
Bordeaux holds a military parade on the quays and fireworks over the Garonne, with wine bars in the old town for the afternoon.
About $180 a person a day
- Place des Quinconces
Join the concerts on the big square and watch the fireworks over the Garonne from the riverfront. Arrive in the late afternoon for a quay picnic spot, since the square and riverbank draw the evening crowds.
- Miroir d'Eau
Stand at the water mirror on the riverbank for a local tip view of the Garonne fireworks. Expect quay road closures in the evening and arrive before nightfall.
- Quai des Chartrons
Watch the military parade along this quay, which in the 2024 pattern ran from 6:30pm to 9pm, followed by fireworks over the Garonne at 10:45pm. Treat that as a pattern, not a confirmed 2027 or 2028 schedule, and check the city programme close to the trip.
- Wine More Time
Drink Bordeaux wine with sharing plates at this Saint-Pierre quarter wine bar before heading to the quays for the evening. Book a quay facing table early if you want to eat facing the river on the night.
Toulouse
Toulouse gathers on the Garonne banks around the Pont Neuf for fireworks over the river, with picnics on the Prairie des Filtres.
About $180 a person a day
- Prairie des Filtres
Picnic in this riverside park on the Garonne, Toulouse's summer evening lawn and a front row for the fireworks over the river. Arrive well before nightfall for a spot by the water.
- Pont Neuf
Watch the Garonne fireworks from around this bridge, the focal viewing area named in Toulouse guides. Older guides describe fireworks shot from boats on the river, so check the city programme for the exact time.
- Quai de la Daurade
Eat at a quay cafe or picnic on the riverbank here before the evening show. Book a central hotel early for July and arrive at the riverbanks well before nightfall.
- Place du Capitole
Gather on the central square in the daytime among the pink brick streets before the evening on the river. Do not assume free museum entry on 14 July, since Toulouse museums are free on the first Sunday of the month, not on Bastille Day.
Strasbourg
Strasbourg dances at a public ball and watches fireworks and drones over the Parc de l'Etoile, with the lit cathedral facade a short walk away.
About $180 a person a day
- Parc de l'Etoile
Picnic in the park before the ball and the fireworks fired from here at 10:30pm. Last year the show added a drone display with 480 drones and music, and the park is the only large scale fireworks site in the city centre, so arrive well before 10:30pm.
- Place du Marechal de Lattre de Tassigny
Dance at the ball held on this square beside the fireworks park on the night of 14 July. Expect closures and crowds around the park in the evening.
- Strasbourg Cathedral
Watch the cathedral facade light show, which runs nightly from nightfall to midnight in summer, then walk to the fireworks park. Pair the lights with the 10:30pm show for a full evening.
- Petite France
Eat in the Petite France quarter or around the cathedral square before heading to the fireworks park. Book a Petite France or cathedral quarter hotel early for July.
Nantes
Nantes watches fireworks over the Loire from the quays and the Ile de Nantes, with the Machines de l'Ile for the daytime.
About $180 a person a day
- Quai de la Fosse
Watch the fireworks over the Loire from this quay, fired from Ile Beaulieu. A 2023 report put the show at 11pm, but that is a single year pattern, not a confirmed 2027 or 2028 time, so check the city programme and arrive in the evening, not at nightfall.
- Parc des Chantiers
Picnic in this riverbank park on the Ile de Nantes before the fireworks. It is one of the named viewing spots for the Loire show, so arrive in the evening for a good place.
- Butte Sainte-Anne
Climb to this hill for a higher viewpoint over the Loire fireworks. Go before nightfall, since the riverbank spots fill in the evening.
- Le Nid
Drink at the bar at the top of Tour Bretagne, 144 metres high with a view of the show. Book in advance, since it is a small, high viewpoint, and check whether the bar view is open on the night.
Annecy
Annecy fires its national day fireworks over the lake, watched from the lawns of Le Paquier with the mountains behind.
About $180 a person a day
- Le Paquier
Picnic on the lawns by the lake before the fireworks, which turn the lake into a colourful, shimmering mirror. Last year the day included free entertainment for children in the afternoon and music before fireworks later in the evening, so arrive in the afternoon for a lawn place.
- Jardins de l'Europe
Watch the lake fireworks from these gardens beside Le Paquier. Do not confuse the 14 July show with the Fete du Lac, the big August lake festival with numbered seats, which falls on the first Saturday in August.
- Palais de l'Ile
Visit the 12th century island prison in the old town canal by day before the lakefront evening. Book a lakefront or old town hotel early for July.
- Old Town canal streets
Walk the old town canal streets in the afternoon and eat there before the lake fireworks. Avoid driving in the centre on the night if possible, since lakefront traffic follows the same crowded pattern as the August festival in a smaller form.
Cannes
Cannes puts on a show from its summer fireworks festival over the bay on 14 July, watched from the beaches of the Croisette.
About $180 a person a day
- Boulevard de la Croisette
Watch the pyrotechnic festival fireworks from the Croisette, the beach or the seafront walk. The festival page lists the 14 July show at 11pm, later than the other festival nights at 10pm, so arrive well before 11pm, and recheck the date and time for 2027 and 2028.
- Le Suquet
Climb to the old town hill for a higher view over the Croisette fireworks, and eat in Le Suquet before the 11pm show. Book a Croisette or Le Suquet hotel early for July.
- Musee de la Castre
Visit the museum in the old castle on Le Suquet by day and climb its tower for the view over the bay, then come down for the evening fireworks. Check holiday hours.
- Palais des Festivals
Walk the Croisette past the festival palace in the daytime and check its programme before the evening show. Expect Croisette road closures and beach crowds on the night.
