Things to do in Arcachon
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Arcachon
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best months: warm, swimmable, everything open, without August crowds and prices. September is arguably the best month.
Peak season: every boat and beach club open and the warmest water, with the highest prices and fullest car parks.
Spring: the patronal festival around 25 March, the dune staircase returns, cold water and good value.
Autumn: oyster season, migratory birds at Le Teich and the best restaurant availability, with shorter days.
Worst for a beach trip: many seasonal places closed or weekend only, thin boat timetables, wet and windy days.
What's on
- Fête Patronale d'Arcachon around 25 March
Mass for those lost at sea, a procession and a blessing of the sea, with a fairground weekend.
- Escapades Musicales June to July

- Fêtes de la Mer 14-15 August

Is Arcachon safe?
- Swim on Atlantic beaches only in supervised zones and respect the flags. Currents near the passes are strong.
- Never walk out across bay mudflats toward a channel. Tides return fast and the mud is soft.
- Carry water and shade on the dune and the Banc d'Arguin. There is none at the top or on the bank.
- Obey pine forest fire closures in hot dry summers without argument and lock bikes properly in season.
Arcachon travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Anonymous seafront terraces charge a premium for platters the market bars and port huts sell better for less.
- The dune at midday in August is the overrated version. Go at eight in the morning instead.
- Driving to Cap Ferret for a two hour August lunch can take longer on the road than at the table. Go by boat or bike.
Getting around Arcachon: public transport and more
- Take the train from Bordeaux St-Jean, about 50 minutes, then walk, use the free lift to Ville d'Hiver, and take Baia buses to the dune.
- Use boats as transport: Arcachon to Cap Ferret takes about 30 minutes and beats the August peninsula road.
- Cycle the flat bay path network and rent in Arcachon or Cap Ferret. Confirm bike carriage for your specific boat sailing.
- Check your return bus from the dune before you set off. Evening and off season frequencies thin out.
